Home News Why do lash extensions sting in the shower? Now reading: Why do lash extensions sting in the shower? Share PrevNextIf you’ve been a lash artist for a while, then you’ve probably received a call from a client complaining about their eyes burning in the shower. Usually, 9 times out of 10 the client will think it’s the lash adhesive being reactivated and causing the irritation. However, this isn’t the case!
Here’s the reason why your client's lash extensions sting in the shower…
Once the adhesive has cured, it binds to the lashes and is non-reactive. Vapours are only present when the adhesive is in liquid form (when the lash extensions are being applied). Once the adhesive is cured it becomes a polymer (a plastic) it hardens and therefore cannot be dissolved by water.
Therefore, the adhesive is not the cause of the stinging!
The cause of the stinging is actually from a build up of oils/residue on the surface of the skin. Our skin produces oils daily and face products and makeup all have residues. When water hits the skin, it can cause these oils and residues to get in the eye and cause irritation.
Because the lash extensions are placed 1mm away from the lash line, this leaves room for oils/makeup etc to build up. Clients don't always clean the area properly, so over time, makeup and residue can gather around the lash line.
This is why client aftercare is so important! Clients need to be washing their lashes daily using a Lash Cleanser and brush. A good aftercare routine is essential to keep lashes healthy, we have lots of advice on client aftercare which is available to read here. Feel free to send this blog to your clients!
In addition to client aftercare you could also introduce a post lash cleanse. After you've completed the treatment, cleanse the lashes with Gentle Foaming Cleanser and rinse well with distilled water. This can reduce irritation and help prevent the stinging sensation your clients may feel after leaving their lash appointment. Remember - a post lash cleanse will NOT effect retention, it will actually help improve it!
We hope you found this blog post helpful, as always if you have any questions don't hesitate to get in touch with us on Instagram @LashBase_UK and we'll be happy to help!
