Mexican Jumping Beans
Jumping Beans: A Rebel's Guide to Desert Science - Imagine holding a tiny, boring brown seed and suddenly feeling it kick back like it's alive. Discover how this wooden spaceship survives the desert heat using high-speed physics.Louis tells us... My child did a science fair project to explain why Mexican jumping beans jump when they get warm. It was really fun and was SO popular with everyone! We had people hold them in their hands, and as they warmed up, they began to jump. This was done under a lamp, and without any heat or light in darkened cooler to show the different levels of activity of the jumping beans. Recently I ordered some more for a 'yet to be decided' science project; there are so many possibilities. Check them out, you can now buy Mexican jumping beans online at https://www.amazingbeans.comLet me know how it goes!Barry's Response - Sounds like a riot. Thanks Louis.
Shall I let them in on the secret
- These seeds have small moth grubs living inside them. When heat is applied to the bean, the grub twitches from the heat. Even sunlight produces enough of a heat sensation to elicit this reaction. The larva lives inside and feeds off the inside of the seed for a month or more. Then it goes through its metamorphosis if it survives that long and emerge an adult moth the following spring, with a life span of less than a week afterwards. They have been marketed as toys (of sort) for decades and you can even find them on eBay. To keep them alive, moisten them well in rain water every couple weeks and keep them relatively cool and dry otherwise. They will die from excessive heat or freezing.Search this site for more fun information now. It's called the Jump-Master 3000
You don't just show the bean if you want to win the science fair and melt your teacher's brain. On the sidewalk, there's a Meteorological War.Twitch Physics
Your body heat (about 98.6°F) acts like a heat lamp when you hold a jumping bean. Laspeyresia saltitans (so it's called) hooks its tiny legs into the silk lining inside the shell. Then it snaps its body like a spring.F = maThe larva is heavier than the hollowed-out seed, so that snap transfers energy to the shell, and BOOM — the bean leaps. Jumping jacks are biological! The Deep Breath and air quality
These larvae are sensitive to the air around them, did you know? Seed shells can break if the air is too dry or polluted. Clean, rain-washed air is perfect for these guys. That's why I always say: Protect your local environment. While they wait to become moths, these tiny inventors inside the beans need to breathe. Here's why you should care
It's like you're a larva. Heat (school, stress, chores) sometimes makes you want to jump. But remember: it's just a phase. As the larva turns into a moth, the bean stops moving. It's going through Metamorphosis. Here's a Pro-Tip: Don't just leave your beans on a shelf if you want them to jump for months. Once a week, give them a spa day. Mist them with rainwater. Drinking through the shell! But don't drown them — even rebels need air. What do you say?
You've got air pressure that can snap wood, baby moths that can move houses, and a planet that's way more alive than most people think. It's about seeing a brown seed as a high-speed survival machine. How do you feel about it? Is the jumping bean a genius or just a lucky bug? Under a desk lamp, you can even race them? Try it.Let's have a debate about your craziest science fair fail. Can I help you design a Jumping Bean Habitat using these air pressure principles?Click here to post comments
