    There are two pay-at-pump gas stations near where I live and they close at night. Why would these self-sufficient pumps close at night? It seems like they are losing out on potential profits from late-night drivers.

    I can understand closing the office/inside registers but why do they turn off the pumps which accept cards?

    For safety sake, I think they need a human being there at all times in case something happens to the pumps and they might have to turn them off, or something like that.

    That might be true depending on the state, but there are definitely places that stay open 24 hours without attendants. Especially out West. Most stations have auto-cut offs anyone can hit.

    In Denmark they did stay open all night.

    In most places in America, they are obvious robbery targets, even more so than atms for several reasons. I would guess liability issues for the gas station owners; getting hit for a wrongful death suit by the family of someone killed during a robbery.

    Vernon Forrest was killed during a late night stop at a manned gas station. It would be a daily occurrence with unmanned stations.
