'why Do People Hate Radiohead?'

people hate radiohead because they don't like 'intellectuals' (or people who think they are), they don't like people who try to be clever, they don't like people who 'moan' i neither like or dislike radiohead― gareth, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
People hate Radiohead because they're shit and yet touted as the saviour of music. People hate Radiohead because they're not experimental, but are touted as being the most revolutionary band in the world.― emil.y, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
I hate Radiohead cos they suck. Thom Yorke's voice is like demonspawn to my brain.― Ally, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
A lot of people probably hate them for a similar reason to why I absolutely hate the Strokes. When you don't get something, yet there is mass critical acclaim for it....it tends to piss you off. That being said, I love Radiohead. They received mass critical acclaim but even then with Kid A I don't remember the sickening chorus of unanimous approval the critics are giving the strokes.― patrick, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
I don't hate them. In fact I quite like Kid A, though none of the other albums really interest me oddly. But I am irritated by lots of their fans who consider them to be the be all and end all and don't listen to anything else. The same fans who seem to think Radiohead invented electronica. In fact Kid A was such a cool thing for them to do I think. It made for funny situations seeing which fans would go "oh I like it" or which would go "thats shit, they've gone insane".― Ronan, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
I hate them because they make music. And I hate music.― Tanya Headon, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
was Thom mentioned on the "throwing objects at face" thread. he's one of mine, though he already looks like he's been smacked on the mouth with a house brick. maybe he has― Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
Tanya, will you do a 'hate' on Pluxus? I think I love them too much, and I might explode.― emil.y, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
aren't Pluxus playing london very soon?― gareth, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
Dunno, but they're playing Nottingham on Tuesday. I have ticket #1! I'm so very very excited, but I keep forgetting to email my Swedish friend and ask him how to say "I love your music and want to have your twee electronic babies" in Swedish...― emil.y, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
Because the only good song they had was Fake Plastic Trees.― kevin enas, Wednesday, 30 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
People hate Radiohead because they get lots of press, sell lots of albums, and make lots of money while keeps toiling away for and gets nowhere near the recognition they deserve. Besides all that "revolutionary" stuff they do on Kid A was done by Autechre, Aphex Twin, Brian Eno, Can, Neu, Kraftwerk, and innumerable other artists first.I think Radiohead is the Pink Floyd of the current era. They sell tons of records even though almost no one knows the band member's names or what they look like. Critics love them, but purists hate them. They're not doing anything new, per se, but they still manage to outshine their predecessors, peers, and progeny.
― Nick Coleman, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
Sorry, that was:...and make lots of money while [insert favorite indie band here] keeps toiling away for [insert favorite indie label here] and gets nowhere near the recognition they deserve...
― Nick Coleman, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
Did they ever claim that Kid A was 'revolutionary' though?― DG, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
Also everyone knows who Larffin' Thom is.― Tom, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
Because they're popular. Actually, they're not just popular in general, but among "smart people". Therefore, if you want to be one of these "smart people" you'll love everything they do, and the more strange or left-field it seems, the smarter you will seem in turn. As with plenty of other bands they are simply a good band that are surrounded in such a swarm of hype and anti-hype that it becomes hard to actually judge the music objectively.― Adam, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
Thom Yorke seems like Moby's creepy older brother. How old is Thom Yorke? How old is Moby?― Lindsey B, Thursday, 31 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
No, DG, they did not say that. It's all in the press.Thom is apparently 33. Can't be bothered to look up Moby.
― Simon H., Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
Moby is 36. So Thom must really look old then. Their political stance is quite similar isn't it?― alex in mainhattan, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
Interesting fact about the origin of Moby's name from the AMG I didn't know:Born Richard Melville Hall, Moby received his nickname as a child; it derives from the fact that Herman Melville, the author of Moby Dick, is his great-great granduncle― alex in mainhattan, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
pretty simple for me: radiohead is academick muzak.― helenfordsdale, Friday, 1 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)
three months pass...Cos they suck. Big time.― Anna Rose, Friday, 17 May 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
six months pass...Why do ppl hate radiohead?― cuitlahac, Friday, 29 November 2002 08:55 (twenty-three years ago)
I think people hate Radiohead because there's a difference between music and art...and...er.... there's a difference between good art and bad art...― B, Friday, 29 November 2002 08:59 (twenty-three years ago)
They receive an extraordinary amount of praise from the press. If you don't like them, your bafflement at the media reaction will lead your dislike to swell into hatred. I don't like the Strokes much, but they wouldn't bother me in the slightest if there weren't such a big hoo-ha about them, so I understand the reaction completely. As for me, I think Radiohead deserve the hoo-ha: the last 3 recs are superb.― weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 29 November 2002 12:40 (twenty-three years ago)
Tom Millar told my little brother (when everyone else was asleep except for those 2 and Tom was pretty hammered, and we were all in a cabin in Minnesota because I was gonna get married in 2 days) that he hates Radiohead because they're doing a piss poor job of destroying music. My brother said that Tom rambled on about this for like 4 or 5 hours. Then he grabbed the 1.75 liter bottle of Jack Daniels and went for a walk around the lake.― Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Saturday, 30 November 2002 02:48 (twenty-three years ago)
This sounds like how the next Focus Group should be conducted.― Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 30 November 2002 03:44 (twenty-three years ago)
That's how every night at my house is conducted, Ned. Except without the lake.― Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 30 November 2002 07:22 (twenty-three years ago)
People hate Radiohead because if you admit to liking Radiohead, it is assumed that you have the tiny frame of reference required to think they're some kind of super-experimental music-saviours. Which they aren't. They're just a fairly innovative band with some great songs.― Callum (Callum), Sunday, 1 December 2002 12:47 (twenty-three years ago)
That's the first thing that you've said on this board that I agree with, Callum.― Melissa W (Melissa W), Sunday, 1 December 2002 12:48 (twenty-three years ago)
Oh good.― Callum (Callum), Sunday, 1 December 2002 12:52 (twenty-three years ago)
Melissa - I keep meaning to ask you this on some Rhead thread or other, what do you think of Brad Mehldu's Rhead covers? (He does 'Exit Music For A Film' on 'Art of the Trio Vol. 3' and 'Paranoid Android' on his new alb, 'Largo'.)― Andrew L (Andrew L), Sunday, 1 December 2002 15:08 (twenty-three years ago)
That's how every night at my house is conducted, Ned. Except without the lake.Everything makes sense now!
― Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 1 December 2002 19:17 (twenty-three years ago)
His Paranoid Android drags on a bit doesn't it?― Callum (Callum), Sunday, 1 December 2002 20:25 (twenty-three years ago)
You think? I love it. I heard he's been doing Everything In It's Right Place with the trio, that I would love to hear.― Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 1 December 2002 22:00 (twenty-three years ago)
who is brad mehldu?― ron (ron), Sunday, 1 December 2002 22:17 (twenty-three years ago)
The secret identity of Brad Mehldau.― Jordan (Jordan), Sunday, 1 December 2002 22:25 (twenty-three years ago)
well whos thatdammit you guys are going to make me actually type this into a search engine
― ron (ron), Monday, 2 December 2002 04:01 (twenty-three years ago)
his website is very pretty but it does not work― ron (ron), Monday, 2 December 2002 04:04 (twenty-three years ago)
i saw a interview with him once, he plays jazz and from what i read he is this huge wanker. even more than the regular jazz guy― vic (vicc13), Monday, 2 December 2002 04:11 (twenty-three years ago)
the cover of his new album is so nice looking i'd be tempted to buy it just based on the design. i am downloading a few songs now― ron (ron), Monday, 2 December 2002 04:21 (twenty-three years ago)
i think i can be content without this album― ron (ron), Monday, 2 December 2002 04:27 (twenty-three years ago)
His Art of the Trio albums are genius, I think he stretches standards possibly as far as they can be stretched without going completely out. Their group interplay is just sick.I started a thread on the new album but no one really answered, I think. I like it a lot, it's his experiment with beats and textures and simplicity. It's more accessible than his other stuff but I could also see how it could be more hit or miss with people.
Also, he clearly has a pretty unique sound because I was playing it in the car with my friend and she said "you know, he sounds a lot like whoever's playing on Scott Weiland's album," which is of course like the only rock record Mehldau has ever played on.
Anyhow, Radiohead.
― Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 2 December 2002 05:21 (twenty-three years ago)
maybe i should check out some more, but the prospect of a current jazz pianist doing radiohead and beatles covers just was sounding really wack― ron (ron), Monday, 2 December 2002 05:29 (twenty-three years ago)
Beatles? Eww.― Callum (Callum), Monday, 2 December 2002 12:51 (twenty-three years ago)
Vic's post really made me laugh, but I think I like my jazz guys to be 'huge wankers' (ef K. Jarrett.) I really enjoyed Mehldau's pugnacious sleevenotes on 'Art of the Trio 4' where he moans abt critics always comparing him to Bill Evans, and mounts a pretty gd 'defense' of improvisation over composition.― Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 2 December 2002 13:08 (twenty-three years ago)
five months pass...Radiohead change the way i think about music without them my life wouldn't be comeplete, all they are doin is tryin to put plessure in to peoples lives and all some of you can do is have a moan at them even though you say they are moaning basbards. one of the people who wrote in sad they make loads of money but half of the money they make goes and helps people who need it the most i.e the starving in africa. And another thing there names are, Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, Colin Greenwood, Ed O'Brian and Phil Selway. Radiohead make brilliant music and they deserve all of the gratatude that they get.― Chris Graham, Thursday, 29 May 2003 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)
half? unlikely.― keith (keithmcl), Thursday, 29 May 2003 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)
