Why Do We Have Rules? | KS1 Citizenship | Primary - BBC Bitesize

What are rules?

Rules are instructions we are asked to follow.

You may have rules at home, at school or in the community.

Watch - Explore why we have rules

The Community Club friends learn why rules exist and why it's important to follow them.

Video Transcript

Woodrow: Right, the jam tarts are ready!

All: Yummy!

Woodrow: Everyone, it's home time.

Hey, have you forgotten one of the club rules we agreed on?

All: Hmm…Always clean up?

Woodrow: Exactly. And can you remember why that rule is important?

All: No…

Woodrow: Well, we clean up after ourselves because a messy kitchen is dangerous. Someone could slip and hurt themselves.

Also, how do you think the next group will feel finding all your mess?

All: Not good.

Woodrow: So, 'always clean up' is a rule which keeps us safe and makes things fair.

Hey, great job kids. What other rules keep us safe or make things fair outside of community club, do you think?

Lucy: When you cross the road, you have to wait for the green man before you go!

Ariana: You shouldn't hurt other people.

Mo: You shouldn't damage public property.

Woodrow: Great examples. Our government makes rules that everyone must stick to. Having rules makes things safer and fairer.

But we need to remember to follow them. Now, get home safely, everyone!

All: Hurray!

Why do we have rules?

Rules keep us safe and make sure everyone is treated fairly.

Rules also bring order.

For example, we could be asked to raise our hand or wait our turn if we are in a group and want to ask something.

If there were no rules, everyone would talk at once and nobody would be able to hear what anyone was saying!
