Why does a compass point North?

Why does a compass point North & would it also point North on the Moon if there is a North on the Moon?

Emma

Answers I dont pretend to know a lot about this however the compass works on the principle of poles. The earth has a north and south pole they are magnetised as such and so a compass is actually pointing to the magnetic north of the earth. green957 25 June 2011 The North Pole of a magnetic compass needle is attracted to the Geographic north Pole of the earth. This does not confer any effect of any kind. We all know that the North Pole of a magnet is attracted only to the South Pole of the magnet, hence it can be duduced that close to the Geographic north Pole, there is the Earth's magnetic South Pole, and the compass is not in anyway attracted to the Geographic north Pole, but to the Magnetic south Pole of the earth located close to the Geographic north Pole of the earth. Wisdom alone will teach us that there is a difference between Magnetic poles and Geographic poles. Robert Ihiechi Chigoziri 28 March 2021 > Add an answer Cancel reply Your answer Last name* E-Mail*
