Why Don’t I Want To Date?

Friends and websites and magazines and random strangers all have something to say about your dating life. A thousand tweaks and fixes, sure to help you land the perfect match. Maybe you’ve tried some of them, to no avail. Maybe you’ve embarked on a series of misadventures that never last more than one or two dates. Or maybe you’re not even interested in dipping your toes in the dating pool.

When you step back from all the social pressures and media messages, do you come to the conclusion that you simply do not want to date? That the whole relationship game just isn’t your thing, like dating is someone else’s idea of a good time and you’re just pretending? Do you start to realize that you don’t find people compelling in a romantic or sexual way, like other people do? Do you start to wonder why you’re different?

Many people who never become sexually interested in anyone are asexual. Asexuality is a sexual orientation, and it’s just as normal and valid as any other. Alternatively, many people who never become romantically interested in anyone are aromantic. Being aromantic is a romantic orientation, and like asexuality, it’s normal and valid. It is possible to be either asexual or aromantic separate from one another, and it’s also possible to be both at the same time.
