Mindhunter: Dramatic trailer for second season of Netflix show

David Fincher has now confirmed Mindhunter season three is not on the cards in a new interview. The director has revealed more about his decision ahead of the release of his new film Mank. Express.co.uk has rounded up all you need to know about the show's cancellation and the reasons behind it.

Why has Mindhunter season 3 been cancelled?

Netflix series Mindhunter has been a big hit with viewers interested in the origins of criminal profiling in the FBI.

Since the show first started in October 2017, viewers have followed Holden Ford (played by Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) as they travelled the USA interviewing serial killers.

Delving into their psychology as well as that of its lead characters, the series has been widely acclaimed.

This continued when the second season was released on Netflix in August 2019 and saw the profilers interview killers like Charles Manson (Damon Herriman).

However, ever since it came to an end, the future of the series has been in question.

Now, it seems like hope for the continuation of the show is finally lost as Fincher has confirmed there are no plans for it to continue.

He explained this in a recent interview with Vulture ahead of the release of his new Netflix film Mank.

Revealing the decision behind it ending, he said: “Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was an expensive show.

“We talked about, ‘Finish Mank and then see how you feel,’ but I honestly don’t think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did season two.

“And on some level, you have to be realistic about dollars have to equal eyeballs.”

The news does not come as a huge surprise as in January 2020, the stars of the show Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv were released from their contracts.

At the time, it was confirmed the show had been put on “indefinite hold” at Netflix.

In the interview with Vulture, Fincher also revealed how the process of making Mindhunter was tough for him.

Shot on location in Pittsburgh over the majority of the year, he explained how it took its toll.

He added: “We lived there for almost three years.

“Not year in and year out, but probably six or seven months a year... Mindhunter was a lot for me.”

Fincher continued: “It’s a 90-hour workweek. It absorbs everything in your life.

“When I got done, I was pretty exhausted, and I said, ‘I don’t know if I have it in me right now to break season three.’” 

However, despite Fincher being clear the show was ending, Netflix has not been so keen to put the nail in the coffin just yet.

In a statement to Vulture about whether Mindhunter would be back, a spokesperson confirmed it was not in the pipeline.

Although, they did go on to add: “Maybe in five years.”

Mindhunter seasons 1-2 are available to stream on Netflix now.
