Why I Think Schmidt Two-timing Cece And Elizabeth...

Okay, I fucking love Schmece with all my goddamn heart, and their slow burn was so satisfying, but I cannot deny that the writing and cheating arc (that I wish to forget) that happened to them in Season 3 was atrocious. That made absolutely no sense to me and here’s why:

- although being the resident douchebag of the gang, Schmidt deep down is sweet and loving. He wouldn’t want to intentionally hurt people and he is proven to be a very intellectual person. So WHY?? WHY THE HELL WOULD THEY WRITE THIS SMART AND ACTUALLY LOVING PERSON TO BE DUMB ENOUGH TO CHEAT?

- it takes away the most important part of their relationship: the whole “Schmidt doesn’t deserve Cece and he knows it” thing. For the entire series, almost every person says that it’s messed up how someone like Cece would fall for someone like Schmidt, and this was such an important part of their whole story because even Schmidt knows this (that’s why he breaks up with her in the first place). By the two-timing storyline, it devalues this entire concept. Hear me out… It’s one thing when you think you think you’re not enough for someone even if they love you, but it’s a whole other thing when cheating was an issue you guys faced. By making Schmidt cheat on Cece, yeah… He really doesn’t deserve her if that’s the case.

- Schmidt loves Cece more than anything in the world. Look, Elizabeth didn’t deserve the two-timing as much as Cece did, and I’m pretty sure that he did love her, but it has always been Cece. The dude wouldn’t fucking ruin her wedding if he’s just gonna end up cheating on her.

- as I mentioned, Schmidt deep down is sweet. Because of that, I always saw him as a “playboy but is surprisingly committed to one woman if ever he falls in love” type. Also, it’s low key been proven in Season 1 that Schmidt would give up his whole life plans for her when she had her pregnancy scare, so… WHERE THE HELL DID THAT GO?

But on a psychological and side (I’m not a psych major lmao but I took some classes before) I hate to say this, but I understand Schmidt’s defense to Cece when he revealed why he was two-timing. He couldn’t let go of Elizabeth because she was his first love and was someone who accepted him for who he was. As for Cece, he couldn’t let her go because she was the first person to genuinely love him for the first time in a long time, and accepted him despite knowing he was never worthy to be with her. Disclaimer: I DO NOT, IN ANY WAY, CONDONE SCHMIDT’S ACTIONS. CHEATING AND TWO-TIMING IS TERRIBLE AND NO ONE SHOULD DO THAT AND DESERVES TO BE A VICTIM OF THAT. I WAS ONLY TRYING TO “PSYCHOANALYZE” SCHMIDT.

But anyway, here’s what I wish what happened instead:

- Schmidt chooses NO ONE. Yeah, you heard me right. This could have been the start of his character development. I still see him being deeply in love with both women, but realizing he has deeper feelings for Cece in the long run. For Elizabeth, I see either making her so angry with Schmidt she doesn’t want to see him again, or end things in a civil matter. As for Cece, I see her extremely heartbroken over what happens and then everything realigns with the show’s actual storyline.

- a nice conversation where Schmidt would ask Cece if she would’ve taken a chance on him if he were still fat.

- in regards to the whole “Schmidt doesn’t deserve Cece and he knows it” thing, this actually gets addressed (I see it in conversation with the former point I made) and we actually get to find out what Cece genuinely likes about Schmidt (although what Cece liked about Schmidt was subtly hinted during a few moments through Season 4).

- ah yes… SPEAKING OF FRIENDSHIP! More on that post-Schmidt not choosing because when they truly fell for each other, it was when they actually became friends.

BUT YES I STILL LOVE SCHMECE SO MUCH AND THE WRITERS REALLY DID THEIR BEST TO MAKE UP FOR THE TREACHEROUS S3 WRITING.
