Censorship is defined as ‘blocking something from being read, heard or seen.’ It has been used since Roman times, where they believed censoring information was a way to ‘shape the people’. Today, many people are convinced that censorship is a political tool employed to deprive citizens of their right to freedom of speech. However, the definition of the word ‘censorship’ does not have any negative connotations. In fact, it is rather neutral. That being so, there ought to be circumstances where censorship is an irreproachable technique - to benefit society, in contrast to the detrimental effects it is said to have. Advertisements are mostly used to visually promote a product. Consequently, advertisers only include the product’s strengths and undeniably exclude the defects. This can be misleading to the audience, especially if the product is deemed to be harmful. Here is where censorship comes in. This can be proven by censorship being utilised to protect audience members by removing deceitful messages present in media forms (such as advertisements, films, music videos, etc...). Censoring information is also put into service to guarantee one’s privacy, especially within social media websites where personal information should remain private. Censorship can be used in films to prevent audience members from watching ‘explicit’ material (such audience members include children) or remove material that may be considered offensive to other countries. Overall, censorship’s main intent is to protect people’s information or protect people from certain types of information. So why do we always continually perceive censorship as sinful?
