Isnt that illegal? Tell me your thoughts. reply | flag message 2: by Kristen (new) - rated it 5 stars Dec 10, 2013 08:11PM Kristen It's not unusual for older actors to play teenagers. And Four is almost 20 in the book, so it's really not that different.Besides, I'm guessing that in this society, where 16 year olds are considered adult enough to decide the rest of their lives via factions, they're considered old enough to be in an adult relationship with someone older than they are. reply | flag message 3: by Kristen (new) - rated it 5 stars Dec 10, 2013 08:12PM Kristen I just remembered he's 18 in the book. I was thinking he was 19. Still not a huge difference. reply | flag message 4: by Edward the Energetic Dog (new) - rated it 4 stars Dec 11, 2013 02:54AM Edward the Energetic Dog Because he is a pedophile. reply | flag message 5: by Widnieisnow (new) - rated it 5 stars Dec 11, 2013 03:10AM Widnieisnow Older actors play teenagers all the time. However, the guy playing Tobias looks like he can pass for 22+ not 18 lol He's hot though, so who cares, reply | flag message 6: by Bridget (new) - rated it 5 stars Dec 11, 2013 07:07AM Bridget The HBO show "Game of Thrones" does the same thing with all of its young characters--they bump the ages of them up by 2 years so that the show is more believable. In the books, there is a competent king who is only 16 years old. It'd look silly IRL. Pretty common thing to do to make movies/shows look a little more realistic, and perhaps it helps older viewers relate to the characters more too. reply | flag message 7: by Emma (new) - rated it 3 stars Dec 11, 2013 07:23AM Emma Widnieisnow wrote: "Older actors play teenagers all the time. He looks older than my husband who is 34! An 18 year old with a 24 year old is not that bad, really. My husband and I got together when I was 20 and he was 28. reply | flag message 8: by anthea (last edited Dec 11, 2013 07:26AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars Dec 11, 2013 07:24AM anthea ^^ Are you talking about Joffrey? Because he looks 16 in the shows...I think people's idea of what people should look like at what age is slightly warped. I mean, I had a boy in my class when we were all 14 and he looked like he could be 24 because he was tall and quite broad and had a LOT of facial hair. But then there's me, I'm 18 and I get mistaken for my 14year old sister ALL the time. reply | flag message 9: by Bridget (new) - rated it 5 stars Dec 11, 2013 07:37AM Bridget Annie wrote: "^^ Are you talking about Joffrey? He is 15-16 in the books, but a bit older than that in the show. As for Joff, he is only supposed to be about 12-13 in the books, so point made. reply | flag message 10: by Kristen (new) - rated it 5 stars Dec 11, 2013 03:03PM Kristen Annie wrote: "I think people's idea of what people should look like at what age is slightly warped. My friend, on the other hand, always looked older. She's 5 years younger than me and since jr high has always looked 5-10 years older than she is. So you can't really base someone's age on what they look like they should be. reply | flag message 11: by Brenna (new) - rated it 5 stars Dec 11, 2013 03:13PM Brenna It's not that bad because he doesn't look 24!! reply | flag message 12: by Emma (new) - rated it 5 stars Dec 11, 2013 06:17PM Emma Jess wrote: "Probably because Theo James was cast, and he's like 28 i think??And apparently Tris' age has been bumped up to 18 as well, maybe to close this age gap by a couple years."WHAT, THEY CHANGED THE AGES TO 18?!??!?!? THAT WOULD MEAN YOU DONT TAKE THE APTITUDE TEST UNTIL YOU ARE 18!!! THEY CANT CHANGE THAT! reply | flag message 13: by Claire (new) - rated it 5 stars Dec 11, 2013 06:22PM Claire Emma wrote: "Jess wrote: "Probably because Theo James was cast, and he's like 28 i think??And apparently Tris' age has been bumped up to 18 as well, maybe to close this age gap by a couple years."WHAT, THEY..."I agree. You can't change the Tris's age because then they don't take the test until 18 adn it would mess other things up. reply | flag message 14: by Eshana (new) - rated it 5 stars Dec 11, 2013 06:30PM Eshana I started laughing when you said I mean wrote isn't that illegal? But no I don't think it illegal. reply | flag message 15: by Widnieisnow (new) - rated it 5 stars Dec 11, 2013 08:16PM Widnieisnow Emma wrote: "Widnieisnow wrote: "Older actors play teenagers all the time. More like 27 plus lol He's still smoking hot though reply | flag message 16: by Maria (new) - rated it 2 stars Dec 12, 2013 03:21AM Maria They up the ages of characters in all these films (Hunger Games as well) so that they try to avoid as much as possible depiction of sexual and violent behavior from teenagers (so that they don't inspire for instance sex with minors). And that's also why they are not bothered about casting actors with the exact age as the characters. Even for the cinema versions of Lolita (where the whole point of the story was that a 12-year old girl takes advantage of a mature guy), older actresses were cast. But really, does it change Veronica Roth's story in any way if the Choosing Ceremony happens at 18 and not 16? I think not. reply | flag message 17: by Edward the Energetic Dog (new) - rated it 4 stars Dec 12, 2013 03:25AM Edward the Energetic Dog He is just a pedophile. reply | flag message 18: by Widnieisnow (new) - rated it 5 stars Dec 12, 2013 02:00PM Widnieisnow Edward the Energetic Dog wrote: "He is just a pedophile."No he's not. The girl playing Tris isn't really 16. It's rare the ages are exactly the same as the novels. Very Rare. reply | flag message 19: by Ella (new) - rated it 5 stars Dec 16, 2013 04:38PM Ella I doubt it's illegal... But Theo is 28 and Shailene isn't 16, either. And remember that Four is supposed to look older than what he really is in the books! reply | flag message 20: by Rachelle (new) - rated it 3 stars Dec 16, 2013 05:06PM Rachelle Antcliff Casting has more to do with acting abilities than pedophilia or the accuracy of an actor's age. Once the roles are cast and the fans have a film to lose themselves in, temporary suspension of disbelief kicks in. Four is 18, Chicago exists only in ruins, and children are forced to brutalize each other. In movies, gay people play straight people, married people play singles, and sometimes older people play younger people. All of it is Hollywood's smoke and mirrors. It's okay. reply | flag message 21: by Fearwakesyouup (new) - rated it 5 stars Dec 16, 2013 05:32PM Fearwakesyouup Emma wrote: "Jess wrote: "Probably because Theo James was cast, and he's like 28 i think??And apparently Tris' age has been bumped up to 18 as well, maybe to close this age gap by a couple years."WHAT, THEY..."I KNOW RIGHT! He's an excellent actor and quite frankly I bet he could do a better job then the next 18 year oold and age DOES NOT I REPEAT DOES NOT MATTER IN HOLLYWOOD! SO GET THE FREAK OVER IT ALREADY! HE'S AMAZING DAMNIT reply | flag message 24: by angelene (new) - rated it 5 stars Dec 28, 2013 05:37PM angelene I think they aged everyone a little. I think Tris is 18-ish during the movie so the age gap isn't as bad. reply | flag message 25: by Somerandom (last edited Dec 28, 2013 05:57PM) (new) - rated it 3 stars Dec 28, 2013 05:49PM Somerandom Edward the Energetic Dog wrote: "He is just a pedophile."Uh, no. Pedophilia is specifically attraction to prepubescent children. That means attraction to children 12 years old and younger (usually.) Even if Tris is 15 or played by a 15 year old, that doesn't make Four or any actor who plays him a pedophile. More like an ephebophile. As to the original OP. Many teenagers look like they could pass for 30 somethings, many look like they're not even in High School.Besides, older actors playing younger characters isn't anything new. Even with adult characters it's nothing new.For example in the cult classic TV parody show "Kath and Kim" (the original Australian version, not the American one *shudders*)the actress who plays Kim, the stubborn daughter, is actually older in real life than the actress who plays her Mum on the show! reply | flag message 26: by Stephanie (new) - rated it 4 stars Dec 28, 2013 11:29PM Stephanie As many others have said, having older actors play younger characters is pretty common. They did the same for The Hunger Games - originally, I was disappointed, because I thought it would make the story less powerful since the whole point is that KIDS are being forced to kill each other. But Jennifer Lawrence did an awesome job, and Catching Fire turned out to be one of the best book adaptations I've ever seen.As long as the actors are talented enough to do the characters justice, I don't mind. reply | flag message 27: by chinami (new) - rated it 5 stars Dec 29, 2013 05:19AM chinami Christina wrote: "Veronica wrote: "don't care. I know they both are actually older then their characters ages but they should have just left it. 8 years is a bit too much. Think about it why would a 24 year old want to go out with a 16 year old especially if one of them is the others instructor. I don't think it's right. So when I see the movie I'm going to pretend Four/Tobias is 18 like in the book. reply | flag message 29: by Sara (new) - rated it 5 stars Apr 18, 2014 02:30AM Sara I don't think they changed the ages of the characters because of the actors in The Hunger Games so why couldn't Divergent be like that? The actors looked older then they were supposed to be as well. reply | flag back to top post a comment » Add a reference: Book Author Search for a book to add a reference add: link cover Author: add: link photo all discussions on this book | post a new topic
