Why is my mobile data connection so slow?

Do you have slow internet connection on your iPhone® or Android™ device while connected to the Verizon mobile network? These conditions could be affecting your connection:

  • Network unavailable - Our network is built with a strong focus on reliability, but sometimes the unforeseen happens. If an element of our network suddenly becomes unavailable, we may use fail-safes to be sure your service is still usable while we investigate and resolve the issue. This can sometimes mean higher than normal traffic on the systems that are still available, resulting in slower throughput. Visit Explore your network to check for network issues.
  • Signal level - We strive to provide the strongest coverage possible to everyone, but at times factors beyond our control can affect your experience. These factors can include being far from network cell sites, electronic device interference, obstructions, building materials or construction, terrain, geography and even heavy foliage. All of these can contribute to signal blockage, resulting in a slow or unstable connection.
  • Network resources - Occasionally our network resources can be taxed beyond their limits, especially when many people come into an area all at once (e.g., major sporting event, concert, festival, etc.). This increased network traffic can cause congestion, which can cause slower network speeds. Verizon manages data traffic on our network to provide an optimal experience for all customers. During network congestion you may experience reduced speeds until congestion clears or you travel to an uncongested cell site. Congestion can vary from tower-to-tower and minute-to-minute, depending on network traffic at the time.
  • Safety Mode - If you have an older data plan that doesn't include unlimited data usage, you can enable Safety Mode to help prevent overage. If Safety Mode is enabled and you've reached your data limit for the month, your connection operates at slower speeds in to prevent data overage. See our Safety Mode FAQs for more info.

Why is my mobile data upload and/or download speed so slow?

Are your internet upload and downloads slower than usual when you're connected to the Verizon network? these may be the reasons:

  • Blocked signal – Factors beyond our control can cause unstable or slow internet, data and upload speeds. These include being far from network cell sites, electronic device interference, obstructions, building materials or construction, terrain, geography and even heavy foliage.
  • High network traffic – When many people in one area access the network (e.g., at a sporting event, concert, festival, etc.), slow internet and cellular data speeds can happen. You may have slow data speeds until the network congestion clears or you reach an uncongested cell site.
  • Unexpected network events – Our network is built with a strong focus on reliability. If a part of our network becomes unavailable, increased traffic on the still-available system can cause slower cellular data and slower upload/download speeds until the issue is resolved Visit Explore your network for more information.
  • Safety Mode is on – Mobile data plans that don't have unlimited mobile data may have a Safety Mode feature to prevent overages. Why is my Wi-Fi connection so slow?

The quality of your connection to a Wi-Fi network can be affected by many things. For help with your Wi-Fi when your internet connection is slow, it's generally best to reach out to your Internet Service Provider (ISP). However, here are some things you can check that might help you fix your connection issue:

  • Try moving closer to your Wi-Fi router. If this isn't an option due to its location try connecting to your router via an Ethernet cable (if your device can support a wired connection) or adding a range extender to your Wi-Fi network.
  • Ensure your router is clear of any obstructions (e.g, furniture, appliances, walls, cabinets, other electronic devices, etc.) Every object between your device and the router contributes to degraded signal and can slow internet connection speeds.
  • The most common way to fix connectivity issues on a Wi-Fi network is to reboot your router. Depending on your equipment, the procedure may vary. The easiest way is to disconnect the power adapter (or unplug it from the wall) for a minute or so then plug it back in. Make sure all cables are properly connected and no advanced network settings are configured which could impact connection quality. (Refer to your user guide or router manufacturer for assistance with advanced settings).
  • Be mindful of the number of devices connected to your network and what they are doing (e.g., 3 devices streaming online movies have a greater impact on overall connection speed than 5 devices looking at static web pages, etc.). Additionally, your router may only support a certain number of devices or a certain amount of bandwidth, throughput speed, frequency bands, etc. Refer to your user manual or router manufacturer for more info.

Why is my Wi-Fi so slow?

Here are some reasons why your Wi-Fi may be slow and what you can do:

  • Location – If your Wi-Fi is slow, you may need to move closer to your Wi-Fi router. If that's not possible, try connecting to your router with an Ethernet cable (if your device supports a wired connection). Or try adding a range extender (e.g., Wi-Fi Extender, Wi-Fi booster) to your Wi-Fi network.
  • Obstructions – Make sure your router isn't blocked by furniture, appliances, walls, etc. Everything between your device and the router adds to signal loss and can cause slower Wi-Fi speeds.
  • Multiple devices – Find out how many devices are connected to your network and what they're doing (e.g., 3 devices all streaming movies affect Wi-Fi speed more than 5 devices browsing the web, etc.). Check your user manual or router manufacturer to see if your router has limits to keep in mind (e.g., number of devices supported, amount of bandwidth, throughput speed, frequency bands, etc.).

If these don't help when your Wi-Fi is slow, try rebooting your router:

  • Disconnect or unplug the power adapter for about a minute, then reconnect.
  • Be sure all cables are connected.
  • Check that no advanced network settings are configured that affect connection quality (refer to your user guide or router manufacturer).
