I don't think Yaoi is popular as all, it's just, there. There's a fan base for it, but it's not overwhelming by any mean

Ask the people who like them. If you're straight and doesn't approve of those kinds of things I doubt you'll like the answer.

The first 2 comments sum it up perfectly. There's not much of a fan base at all and most that are are straight woman.

1 bishounen = good 2 bishounen = bettter 2 bishounen in a romantic or sexual relationship with each other = best now if only that extended to more loli yuri......

Fanbase is noisy, it's not that big. I myself read quite a lot of yaoi but there's just a huge amont of stereotypical abusive garbage. Or super cheeeeeeeeeeesy melodramatic nonsense. But because of said things the whole genre is judge as "rapey fetish for straight girls" when there's actually works that decipts homossexual relationship very well. And some happy fluffy stuff that doesn't harm anyone at all...

It's not overly popular... It's just kinda there... It's just the fans that are insane that make it seem like it's huge... When you got one chick posting 20 pics of half nude to fully nude yaoi anime fan art... It makes you think it's huge when in fact it's just one sad person

People (mostly fujoshi) like to sexualize gay relationships simply because they find it "hot". But I'm one of those weirdos who ships characters for their actual interaction and chemistry instead of their genders. Kinda why I stopped reading it so long ago myself. :/ It's effed up. romagia said: now if only that extended to more loli yuri...... YUUUUUUUCK!!! Why is yuri popular? Straight guys like yuri because it's two cute girls getting it on so it makes sense that straight girls like yaoi because it's two hot guys getting it on. I mean there are lesbians that like yuri and gay men that like yaoi out there, but you know what I mean. I don't think yaoi is actually that popular because the fans blow it out of proportion, making the "fandom" look bigger than what it actually is.

More than the yaoi itself (because the reasons for liking it is obvious and may vary), it's the fans I think. They are more passionate and dedicated than casual fans I guess.

Hentai? :/ Lol we all have different levels of tolerance for "f*cked up relationships". Some people hate domestic slapstick abuse but I will take that 100 times over sexual abuse which certainly does make up a huge part of the yaoi genre; let's be honest here. Most of my OTPs are pretty healthy ones anyway and if they didn't start that way, they at least progress by the end of the show/manga.

I don't even like the term of yaoi/yuri (or any of those terms hammered into it either). Personally the relationships are much more interesting and have more effort into them then hetero couples. That's about it. To a younger audience (not just girls) they'll find it hot but I mean if you have no passion about shipping than it's just not for you. /thread

Yeah. Because as someone who has been around the block you will never hear anything about gender / sexual identity coarsed between a striaght relationship -- not to mention the role you play in a relationship, questioning your femenitiy or masculinity. There is also no hardships in really even getting together because most people will accept the norm of a boy and a girl getting together where as two males or two females there is homophobia, relegion values, and how couples handle being in a same sex relationship. It's usually VASTLY harder. The struggle is more authetic and more grounded. I'm not just talking about basic entry level yaoi/yuri. And not all of what I proposed is not in every manga or even heavily brought up but it's what I appreciate about it.
