Why Lord Brahma is not worshipped

Brahma being the creator is not as cherished as the creator God of the monotheists because the world is not so intelligently designed. Lord brahma is also well known for giving boons indiscriminately to asuras who then wreak havoc in the universe which necessitates the intervention of shiva or Vishnu! There are only two temples to Brahma in India like in Pushkar in Rajasthan, but hundreds or rather thousands of shrines to him in Thailand where he is very popular - even more so it seems than the Buddha. Every building in Bangkok has a Brahma shrine at the entrance. All the ancient temples in Indonesia contain three shrines to the trinity and in Bali every village has a temple to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, and every temple contains an altar to him as well.

The other factor is that the work of creation/projection of the universe has already been accomplished, the work of conservation is being done by Vishnu and Shiva dissolves and re-projects the universe. So Brahma is kind of redundant. He cannot give liberation only Vishnu/Shiva can do that so he sits on the side-lines much neglected. His spouse Sarasvati is extremely popular and in fact most people don't even realise that they are a couple!!! She is the archetypal career-focused woman who has far exceeded her husband in her academic and cultural achievements. An excellent role model for the modern career-minded Hindu woman!!!

During middle ages, when sectarian wars were at their peak, the followers of Lord Brahma were probably defeated by other sects, thus, the path of worshipping Brahma gradually got faded. When ultimately Brahma's worship stopped & no follower of him was left, other sects just started to use Lord Brahma in ways which were suitable to glorify their own Ishta dev. Ancient India did worship Brahma. Currently, the Hindus regard Vishnu, Shiva and Shakti as the Supreme God. However, if one investigates the scriptures the Hindus considered Brahma, Indra, Agni, Som/Chandra, Surya etc.

Brahma “was” the Supreme God in Vedic Hinduism. He was the Prajapati and was responsible for creating the universe, Rudras, Humans, Devatas, Asuras, Gandharva, yakshas, saptarishis and all living creatures. His other name is Vidhata, which means Brahma is the author of destiny and destiny cannot be overturned under any circumstances. If one judges the scriptures like an investigator then one will be shocked to find that Brahma created Vishnu, Shiv and Shakti.

Brahma gave birth to Kashyap and Kashyap and Aditi gave birth to Devatas like Surya, Indra, Vishnu, Agni, Pawan. This is why Vishnu was called “Upendra” which means the younger brother of Indra. The Vishnu Puran clearly states that Brahma gave birth to crying boy called Rudra and all Hindus know that Rudra and Shiv are same. Brahma is the father of Daksh who gave birth to Sati. Every Hindu knows that Sati is none other than Shakti. Even Himalaya and Brahma are related and Parvati being the daughter of Himalaya is automatically the grand-daughter of Brahma.

Thus Brahma is the father of Shiva, grandfather of Vishnu and Sati. Even today many fatalist Hindus say that the writings of Brahma aka destiny cannot be changed. The cult of Brahma was predominant before the rise of the Vishnu, Shiva and Shakti. However, in the Puranas, his role was subordinated and his worship was ended. Bhrigu and Shiva cursed Brahma in two different circumstances which led to his demotion. Gradually, the cult of Brahma was overtaken by cults of Vishnu, Shiva and Shakti.

Consequently, the Vaishnavas subordinated Brahma and made Vishnu the creator of Brahma. The worshippers of Shiva did the same and made Shiv the creator of Brahma. Shaktism did the same and subordinated Brahma as the elder son of Shakti. However, iconography does not lie, even today, Brahma is indicated as an older person than Vishnu, Shiva and Shakti. Even today Brahma is the main presiding God in Yagnas. This denotes his previous supreme all-powerful status in the Hindu religion which was demoted for unknown reasons.

Along with the creation of the universe, Lord Brahma created a female deity known as Shatarupa ( Shata- Hundred & Rupa- Form) i.e. one who can acquire a hundred forms. Brahma had only one head when he had started creating the universe. Later, due to this female deity, he got five heads. Shatarupa was so beautiful that Brahma became completely carried away by her beauty and stared at her wherever she went. This is not a divine quality to persuade his own creation like this. Shatarupa was embarrassed by this attention and intention and tried to escape his gaze, but in every direction that she moved, Brahma sprouted a new head until he had developed four.

This frustrated her, and in order to escape herself from his gaze, the desperate Shatarupa jumped high in the sky. To continue his gaze, the fifth head was sprouted at the top of his other four heads. He showed his lordship on her. This unholy behavior angered Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva admonished him and chopped his fifth head as a punishment for his unacceptable behaviour. Result : Brahma was attached to the created things(temporary) by ignoring the soul(permanent). He became materialistic than spiritual. The resultant, Lord Shiva cursed Brahma not to be worshipped.

Once, there was competition between Brahma and Vishnu to prove who is greater between them, and who should be worshipped first. In order to win this competition, Lord Brahma spoke a lie and tried to trick Lord Vishnu. Result : Brahma being the creator had lied. On seeing this, lord shiva appeared and chopped his fifth head of Brahma and cursed him not be worshipped. Now the logical Reason. Since Lord Brahma’s work is done, i.e. the creation is the past now. Vishnu being the maintainer is the present and Shiva being the Destroyer is the future. Hence, Trimūrti are represented as follows :

Brahma - exhausted energy

Vishnu - active energy

Maheshwara- passive energy

People care for the present and the future, not the past. This psychology of people makes Lord Brahma to be ignored. Brahma was previously worshipped like in Ramayan all devas always bowed to Brahma. Whatever Brahma says becomes eternal truth. For example Brahma gives Vardaan to Ravan that no Deva or Bhagwan will be able to kill you so Vishnu has to take avatar and then kill Rama like a normal person and not with Sudarshan. Brahma's Vardaan is very powerful. Once Brahma gave Vardaan to Hiranyakashyapa that he cannot be killed during the day or night nor by any weapon. Nor by human or animal.

So Hiranyakashyapa declared himself the God and killed humans. He was a raskhas demon but Vishnu came as Narsimha half animal and half human. He had to wait till evening because what Brahma says is eternal. It cannot be changed. We cannot under estimate Brahma, Vishnu or Mahesh. They are the one. They are the physical form of Omkar or Nirakar who is light upon light. They are the brains of this universe. But again we should not under estimate Brahma. All there Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh are the same. First comes Brahma he created the Universe. Second comes Vishnu he manages the Universe. Last comes Mahesh he destroys the Universe.

There's also a huge pond, quite deep, called Brahma Sarovar, in Haryana around Kurukshetra region. That's built by Lord Brahma, I think, the first ever point of creation of the world, or where God Brahma himself appeared. Of course, the place has God Krishna's story from the Mahabharata and various ancient most stories from the scriptures are engraved on the boundary of that huge sarovar. I am not sure, but there's an Apsara story also related to it. Many devotees visit that place and often take bath after solar eclipse or such events. I am not sure, can't remember, the place is also where you can find traces of the grand Saraswati river which is now said to have disappeared.
