Why Thanos' Sword Could Destroy Captain America's Shield In ...

In Avengers: Endgame Thanos faces off against the Avengers in the Battle of Earth, destroying Captain America's vibranium shield with his double-edged sword. Although vibranium is susceptible to damage, it’s depicted as the most durable material in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The fact that Thanos possesses enough power to beak vibranium is a testament to the strength of the Mad Titan, but more importantly, the weapon itself.

Although the origin of the sword is unknown, the evident force and qualities of the blade reveal clues to its composition. As described in Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos conscripts Dwarf King Eitri to craft the Infinity Gauntlet on Nidavellir. One of the Nine Realms, Nidavellir is a neutron star serving as home to the Dwarves and the genesis of Uru, a metal ore unique to the realm. Mjolnir, Stormbreaker, and Thanos' Infinity Gauntlet are all forged from Uru. An ore that resembles stone with apparent metallic properties, Uru could also be imbued with magic energies.

While the sword could be made from Uru, it doesn’t appear to have been fashioned by the Dwarves of Nidavellir. After acquiring the gauntlet from Eitri, Thanos has no further use for the Dwarves, slaughtering them and leaving only Eitri and a dying star in his wake. This would indicate that Thanos sought other means to fabricate his sword. The artifact could be a design of the same ilk as the weapon introduced in Thor: Love and Thunder, the Necrosword wielded by Gorr the God Butcher. Or, it could even have been conceived by the Celestials. Both scenarios would lend credence to the discernible strength of Thanos’ sword. The Mad Titan didn't just damage the shield, he destroyed it.

How Powerful Is Thanos' Sword Compared To Other MCU Weapons?

Thanos sword

Thanos is portrayed as one of the MCU’s strongest villains. However, without the sword, Thanos is vulnerable. In Infinity War, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and the Guardians of the Galaxy nearly subdue Thanos on the planet Titan. Once equipped with the new blade in Endgame though, Thanos is nearly unbeatable. The sword allows for versatility in both defense and attack. The weapon's dual-sided blade enables him to easily parry at close range, while the central hilt allows for longer-range twirling strikes. He dispatches Iron Man and Thor with relative ease, before besting Captain America (while wielding the shield and Mjolnir). The sword withstands repulsor blasts, lightning summoned from Mjolnir, and blows from Stormbreaker. The vigorous and sturdy composition of Thanos' sword could be cosmic in nature, derived from the Celestials. Beings known to have the ability to mold matter itself, it's plausible that the Celestials would craft a tool proficient to beat the best the Nine Realms have to offer, even Uru and vibranium.

Thor: Love and Thunder introduced All-Black, another daunting weapon with the power to slay gods. The Necrosword was once the property of Knull, the God of the Symbiotes. The blade also granted its wielder the ability to conjure objects, weapons, and ghouls shrouded in darkness. Given the abilities of All-Black, it would be compelling to see how the weapon would fare in a duel against Thanos’ double-edged sword. With Gorr the God Butcher defeated and the Necrosword now reforged into Mjolnir, (thanks to Dr. Jane Foster) it’s unlikely for this duel to occur.

Despite the damage rendered by Thanos’ blade in Avengers: Endgame, the franchise's most dynamic weapons remain intact. Thor is set to return, presumably with Mjolnir and Stormbreaker. Cap’s new shield will return to prominence in Captain America: New World Order. Further, with the return of vibranium-filled Wakanda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, it’s possible that the Avengers’ villain in MCU Phase 5 and beyond would still have use for a weapon capable of contending with even the mightiest of Earth’s heroes.
