- Hoisting and unfurling of the National Flag have different symbolic meanings.
- Any member of the public is free to display the national flag at their home so long as it is in accordance with the dignity of the tricolour.
August 15 is just around the corner and it marks 75 years since the day India awoke to life and freedom. The national flag will be hoisted at the Red Fort in New Delhi by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a ceremonial celebration of Independence Day.
But before you tune into the live telecast of the Independence Day address of the PM from the ramparts of Lal Qila, here are a few things to know about our national flag - the tricolour.
Why is the national flag ‘hoisted’ on Independence Day but ‘unfurled’ on Republic Day?
This is a question that has almost always stumped people, especially back in the day when you couldn’t simply fire up the internet - and we picked the query right off of the web to answer it.
The seemingly-identical holidays of Independence Day and Republic Day are two fundamentally different anniversaries - one celebrates the day India reclaimed freedom from colonial British rule and the other commemorates the adoption of the Constitution.
This is quite conspicuously apparent in the way the Indian National Flag appears on the two occasions.
On August 15, the tricolour is tied to the bottom of the flagstaff and hoisted up the pole to symbolise India’s rise as an independent country.
However, you may have noticed that the flag is unfurled on Republic Day. Why, you ask? It’s because by the time India declared itself a sovereign, democratic and a republic state on January 26, 1950, it was already an independent nation and the flag’s position at the top of the flagpole is indicative of that.
Why does the Prime Minister hoist the national flag on Independence Day but the President unfurls it on Republic Day?
Before January 26, 1950, the Prime Minister used to be the head of state. So, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was the designated person to send the Tricolour up the flagpole on Independence Day.
India’s first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad only took office the day the Constitution came into effect and unfurled the national flag for the first time in 1950.
Can I hoist the National Flag at home?
Yes, you can. The Flag Code of India 2002 states that a member of the public, a private organisation or an educational institution can hoist/display the National Flag on all days and occasions, as long as their conduct is consistent with the dignity and honour of the flag.
Now that the Flag Code has been amended, can I display the tricolour at night?
In July, the specific clause of the Flag Code, which previously forbid the tricolour from being hoisted after sunset, was replaced with the following clause: “where the flag is displayed in the open or displayed on the house of a member of the public, it may be flown day and night.”
