Follow us The research report noted that the measurements of one of the most popular apps-- Instant Blood Pressure app by AuraLife-- was highly inaccurate. Health tracking has become one of the key features in smartphones. While features like tracking calories, activities, water intake, stress and heart rate have been there for quite some time, third party apps have been offering blood pressure measurement on smartphones too. These apps sounds interesting and of course, make it easy and convenient to measure blood pressure whenever you want. However, as blood pressure is a key metric that determines heart health, experts suggest that there in no smartphone or app yet in the market that you should rely on. Researchers at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine had tested one of the most popular blood pressure monitoring apps-- Instant Blood Pressure app by AuraLife. This app requires the top edge of the smartphone is placed on the user’s left side of the chest while the individual places his or her right index finger over the smartphone’s camera. The research report noted that the measurements of one of the most popular apps-- Instant Blood Pressure app by AuraLife-- was highly inaccurate. “The low sensitivity for hypertensive measurements means that approximately four-fifths (77.5%) of individuals with hypertensive BP levels will be falsely reassured that their BP is in the nonhypertensive range,” it claimed. Thankfully, the popular Instant Blood Pressure app by AuraLife got removed a couple years back from iOS. “Between its release on June5, 2014, and removal on July 30, 2015 (421 days), the IBP app spent 156 days as one of the top 50 best-selling iPhone apps; at least 950 copies of this $4.99 app were sold on each of those days,” said an earlier report by the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Not just this app, there are several other apps like Blood Pressure Pocket, Quick Blood Pressure Measure and other that does the same thing. However, the only problem is that these apps are unregulated and no one can vouch for their accuracy. Also, in some cases these apps might just show random systolic and diastolic numbers. According to a report by PhoneArena, “there are two types of blood measuring apps-- one that uses your phone’s camera and flashlight to do the measurements and other kind that simply tell you to press your finger at an arbitrary part of the display”. These apps exist because developers can make a quick buck through advertisements within these apps or even gather and sell your personal medical data. The menace of blood pressure monitoring apps is less on iOS compared to Android. So, if you are using any blood pressure monitoring app, it is highly recommended that you delete it.
