Will Muschamp Steps In At Georgia As On-field Coach - 247 Sports

Scott Cochran, for now, isn't Georgia's special teams coordinator. But Dawgs247 has confirmed that a veteran coach will be filling that assistant coaching void for the time being. Sources close to the program tell Dawgs247 that Will Muschamp will step in as an on-field assistant coach for UGA.

Muschamp has served as the head coach at both Florida and South Carolina. He has also been the defensive coordinator at LSU, Auburn (twice) and Texas. Muschamp joined UGA's support staff this offseason as the senior defensive analyst. His salary was set at $300,000 for the 2021 season.

Kirby Smart's history with Muschamp goes back to 200o. That's when Muschamp hired Smart as his defensive backs coach at Valdosta State. The two coached together again in 2004 at LSU when Muschamp was the head coach and Smart was the defensive backs coach under Nick Saban.

When Saban briefly left college football for the NFL, Muschamp served as his defensive coordinator/head coach with the Miami Dolphins. Smart and Muschamp served on the same staff there in 2006, a year after Smart was the running backs coach at Georgia.

The two didn't join forces until this offseason after Muschamp was let go as South Carolina's head coach. Smart spoke on the record about Muschamp's impact on the program this spring.

"He's probably the guy I lean on the most in terms of coaching the coaches and drill selection and 'hey, how did you do this? How did y'all do this? Did y'all do this period first? That period first?' Trying to find new ways to make our program better," Smart said. "I like, a lot, having him out there. I like having him in the meetings because it's not the skillset of coaching. He's certainly a competent coach and confident, but it's a lot more, for me, I know he's done things a lot of different ways. When you're out there in between drills or a drill is going on, you walk over there and say, 'hey, how did y'all do this? Is there a better way? What do you think about this?' It's helpful. It's certainly breeds confidence and it gives you more ways to do things."

It is unclear whether or not Cochran will be able to rejoin the program. For now, Muschamp is serving as the 10th on-field assistant coach and that will also allow him to hit the road as a recruiter during the fall evaluation period.

Dawgs247 has not yet been able to confirm Muschamp's role regarding special teams. What we do know, however, is that multiple UGA assistant coaches, including inside linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann and tight end coach Todd Hartley have experience coaching special teams.
