The Appraisal District is responsible for determining what the market value of your property was on January 1. Market value is the price at which a property would transfer for cash or its equivalent. If you disagree with the value that has been proposed on your property, you should file an online protest or written protest and submit to the appraisal district by the May 15th protest deadline. Upon receiving your protest, a hearing with the Appraisal Review Board will be scheduled. You may speak to an appraiser informally any time prior to your hearing.
The Appraisal District is NOT a taxing unit and does not collect property taxes. The taxing jurisdictions (county, cities, schools, hospital districts, water districts, emergency services districts) determine your tax burden based upon the tax rates they adopt to fund their operating budgets. These tax rates are expressed as a dollar amount for every $100 of taxable value and are adopted every year in August/September public hearings.
