Wild Wolves

Wolves are mobs that can be tamed. They are extremely useful to take with you in dangerous areas because they’ll attack nearly all mobs that hurt the player. Players can provoke a wild wolf by hitting it.

Minecraft Wolf Hostile.pngYou’ll know a wolf is angry when its eyes become red, similar to a bee when it’s provoked. An angry wolf will attack baby turtles, foxes, rabbits, sheep, and skeletons.
Minecraft Wolf Tame.pngA tamed wolf looks just like a wild one, but the eyes are bigger, and it has a collar on its neck. They won’t attack creepers, ghasts, tamed horses, or tamed cats.

Wolf Varieties

Wolf varieties are an experimental feature which must be manually enabled in Bedrock Edition, and appears in snapshots for Java Edition 1.20.5. Wolves are most commonly found in packs of four, and different varieties can be found in different Biomes.

How to Tame a Wolf

To tame a wolf you’ll need a few bones. Once you have the bones approach a wolf with the bones in hand and, when close enough, feed them the bones. Once you've given the wolf enough bones, hearts will appear above its head, and you'll know it's tamed when a red collar will appear around the wolf's neck.Minecraft Tamed Wolf LG.png

If red isn't your color, simply change the color of the wolf's collar by right-clicking or by pressing the left trigger while holding dye.

How to Breed a Wolf

To breed a wolf, you’ll need to have them tamed before you can breed them. Once you’ve done that, you won’t need to build an animal farm to keep the wolves from running away.

Minecraft Wolf Love Mode LG.png

For the wolves to enter Love Mode, you’ll need to feed them any kind of raw meat. You can even feed the wolves Rotten Flesh and they’ll enter love mode. Once the wolves enter love mode, a puppy wolf will spawn within seconds. The baby wolf that spawns will also be automatically tamed too.

Get to Know Your Wolf

A tamed wolf can be commanded to follow you and stay. If you command it to stay, as long as it's in a safe area, it won't die or despawn. However, should the wolf be following you, it'll attack any mobs that you attack, with the exception being creepers.

Wolves have 40 hearts when fully grown.

If your wolf has engaged in combat, you'll be able to judge the health of your wolf simply by how high its tail is. If your wolf has a low amount of health, it'll begin to whine and the lower its health is the lower its tail will be. You'll be able to heal your wolf by feeding it any raw meat, even rotten flesh.

Quick Tips and Facts

  • Untamed Wolves are known to attack baby turtles, foxes, rabbits, sheep, and skeletons.
  • Untamed Wolves will avoid Llamas.
  • Wolves will shake off the water when wet.

All Wolf Loot

When a wolf is killed by a player or a tamed wolf it can drop anywhere from one to three XP orbs.

Wolf Armor

Wolf Armor is an experimental feature which must be manually enabled in Bedrock Edition, and appears in snapshots for Java Edition 1.20.5.

Wolf Armor can be crafted using 6 armadillo scutes. You can also use dye to change the color of wolf armor.

Once crafted, use the armor on a tamed wolf to equip it to the wolf. Use shears to remove the armor from the wolf.

When equipped, Wolf Armor will absorb all damage taken by the wolf until it breaks, so your wolf will be protected from sudden damage like exploding creepers.

Damaged Wolf Armor will show cracks. You can repair Wolf Armor without needing to un-equip it by using armadillo scutes directly on it.
