Did you know that the English word root ‘voc’ or ‘vok’ comes from the Latin words vox or vocare which means ‘voice’, ‘speech’, or ‘to call or beckon’? Some words that use these roots include vocal, which describes something related to voice or something that has a voice. Vociferous describes something that is speaking in a loud, noisy, or wild way. To provoke means to call out, annoy, or to cause something to happen. To advocate means to speak in favor of or in support of someone or something. Can you think of any other ‘voc/vok’ words?

While currently, ‘voucher’ refers to a document or receipt that proves or guarantees an expenditure, initially it referred to a document that summoned someone to court to vouch or to speak the truth about the title to a property.
