Blizzard and Activision have just announced a release date for the upcoming World of Warcraft expansion, Cataclysm, which has been in beta for the past few months. World of Warcraft: Cataclysm will launch December 7th, 2010, for PC and Mac. It will be available to buy at stores in both a regular and exclusive special edition format, the latter coming with a plethora of bonus items. Blizzard will also be offering the game through it's own website. The storyline for Cataclysm involves the corrupted dragon Deathwing swooping down on Azeroth, spewing fire and creating all manner of mischief. Many existing areas in Azeroth will undergo a radical transformation to reflect the extreme damage Deathwing causes. Cataclysm will bring the usual new quests, items and races with it too, chief of which are the lycanthropic Worgen and the wily Goblins. Cataclysm was announced at GamesCom 2009, where Blizzard boasted that World of Warcraft made up more than half of Activision's entire income, topping Call of Duty, Guitar Hero and Tony Hawk combined. We doubt it's going to get any smaller after Cataclysm either. "Cataclysm includes the best content we've ever created for World of Warcraft. It’s not just an expansion but a re-creation of much of the original Azeroth, complete with epic new high-level adventures for current players and a redesigned leveling experience for those just starting out," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment in a statement. "With the help of our beta testers we're putting on the final polish, and we look forward to welcoming gamers around the world to enjoy it in just a couple of months."
