Yarn by Weight
  • 0-Lace Lace yarn is ultra fine and the usual gauge is 8 or more stitches per inch on US 00-2 needles. The Standard Yarn Weight System lists lace weight yarn as #0 Lace. Lace yarn is often used for shawls and scarves. Most lace weight patterns call for larger needles to achieve light, open, lace designs.
  • 1-Sock, Fingering Sock/fingering weight yarn is used most often for sock knitting and infant items. The Standard Yarn Weight System classifies it as #1 Superfine. It is commonly worked at a gauge of 6-8 stitches per inch on a US 2-4 needle. Fingering weight yarn is also popular for shawls and scarves.
  • 2-Sport Sport weight yarn is measured as #2 Fine on the Standard yarn weight system. It is often used for infant and children's wear. Gauge for sport weight yarn is usually 5-7 stitches per inch on a US 3-5 needle.
  • 3-DK (Double Knit) DK yarns are lighter than worsted, but heavier than sport. DK yarn is equivalent to #3 Light on the Standard Yarn Weight System. It is often used for infant wear and lightweight garments. Gauge for DK is 5-6 stitches per inch on a US 4-6 needle.
  • 4-Worsted Worsted weight yarn also includes Aran and afghan weight yarn. It is #4 Medium on the Standard Yarn Weight System. A workhorse in the yarn family, it is an extremely versatile weight, great for garments, accessories, blankets and more! Common gauge is 4-5 stitches per inch on US 7-9 needles.
  • 5-Chunky Chunky weight yarn is sometimes called Bulky weight. It is equivalent to a #5 Bulky on the Standard Yarn Weight System. You will usually get 3.5-4 stitches to the inch on a US 10-11 needle. Works up quickly. Great for hats, scarves and mittens.
  • 6-Super Chunky Super Chunky/Super Bulky yarn is #6 on the Standard Yarn Weight Scale. Gauge is often 2-4 stitches per inch on a US 11 or larger needle. Super Chunky is great for hats and scarves that you want to finish quickly.
