Yarn Over Slip Stitch

A crochet stitch tutorial

Also known as the half double crochet slip stitch, the yarn over slip stitch (YO SLST) is a great alternative when you need that beautiful braided look that a HDC has, without the height of a normal HDC.

This photo tutorial uses standard US crochet terminology.

A hook with a tapered shape, like the Clover Amour hooks, helps me work this stitch quicker.

Step 1. Yarn over and insert the hook into the indicated stitch.

Step 2. Yarn over and pull up a loop. You now have three loops on the hook.

Step 3. Pull the first loop through the second and third loops on the hook.

PRO TIP! After pulling up a loop and while pulling it through, it helps to rotate your hook away from you so that the lip of the hook points downwards, as shown in the video below.

In this video, I’m working a swatch in the round, working in the back third loop only of the stitches from the previous round. In some of my patterns, you’ll be instructed to work the YOSLST into both loops from previous round. The stitch itself is the same, just the placement differs!
