CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Iowa's News Now) — We love corn in the Midwest. It's a delicious side dish, it's part of the economy, it's a staple. So I'm not trying to "diss" corn by any means. But all of these large, beautiful cornfields do influence the weather... and not in a great way.

The corn fields make it more humid outside. The process is called "evapotranspiration" or corn sweat" It's real and we'll be feeling the effects once again this weekend.

Evapotranspiration (corn sweat)

The science behind it is that plants release water ("sweat") that goes into the atmosphere. Iowa has 13-14 million acres of corn. One acre will release 3,000 to 4,000 gallons of water per day. So across the state of Iowa 46-56 billion gallons of water is being released. That adds five to ten degrees onto the dew point!

This weekend that will lead to dew points in the mid to upper 70s in eastern Iowa. Maybe even some dew points near 80. Those high dew points, combined with temperatures near and above 90, will make it feel even hotter outside.

Luckily there will be some relief to the heat come Monday as a cold front moves through. Temperatures and humidity will be knocked back early next week.
