Multi Pass
NASA is offering the public the opportunity to send their names to the surface of Mars, according to a release. The names will make their way to the Red Planet aboard NASA’s 2020 rover — a fun way for NASA to get the public engaged and excited about sending the next generation rover in search of extraterrestrial life.
“As we get ready to launch this historic Mars mission, we want everyone to share in this journey of exploration,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate (SMD) in a statement.
Rubber Stamp
To join in on the fun, all you have to do is sign a short form right here before Sept. 30. The experience even comes with a “boarding pass” and frequent flyer points — though details about what the points accomplish are sparse.
The names will be written on silicon chips, with each name only taking up a space smaller than one-thousandth of a human hair.
It’s not the first time NASA has given the public such an opportunity. NASA’s InSight mission carried more than two million names to Mars when it launched in May 2018 — each one bearing 300 million frequent flyer miles.
