Young Sheldon Star Doesn't Know What Happens When Prequel ...

Iain Armitage wants to know what happens when Young Sheldon hits the end of its timeline as a The Big Bang Theory prequel series. The CBS family comedy has been on the air for five seasons now. In the first two years after its debut in 2017, Young Sheldon aired back-to-back with its parent show. Ever since The Big Bang Theory wrapped up in 2019, however, Young Sheldon has been standing on its own, and enjoying consistent growth in popularity up to the current season 5.

Set roughly three decades before The Big Bang Theory's timeline, Young Sheldon focuses on the child version of Sheldon Cooper as he lives out his childhood years in Texas with his family. Instead of a straight sitcom, Young Sheldon has become more of a family dramedy as it starts taking on more mature narratives, such as Georgie (Montana Jordan) and Mandy (Emily Osment) accidentally falling pregnant. Despite not being as popular as its parent nerd-centric sitcom, Young Sheldon is currently CBS' highest-rated comedy. But while the network wants to keep it on the air for as long as possible, the spin-off has an established timeline thanks to The Big Bang Theory.

When asked what happens to Young Sheldon when its designated timeline ends, Armitage hinted that he doesn't know what creators Chuck Lorre and Steve Molaro are planning. Instead, the young actor took to Twitter to admit that, like loyal viewers of The Big Bang Theory offshoot, he's eager to find out what comes next when that time finally arrives. The current Young Sheldon season 5 is set in early 1992, as confirmed by a recent episode that tackled the death of Foundation author Isaac Asimov who died on April 6, 1992. At this point, siblings Sheldon and Missy (Raegan Revord) are already 12 years old. According to The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon caught George (Lance Barber) cheating on Mary (Zoe Perry) when he was 13 years old. Assuming that CBS doesn't slow down its storytelling, that arc will be tackled sometime between Young Sheldon season 6 and 7, which have already been confirmed. Subsequently, the Cooper patriarch dies a year after the traumatic incident when the twins are 14. Meanwhile, The Big Bang Theory premiered in 2007, which gives Young Sheldon several more years to go beyond season 7 and transition into the events of its parent series.

Whether or not Young Sheldon goes beyond season 7 is still uncertain. It's worth nothing that Lorre has said he is interested in seeing the prequel run longer than The Big Bang Theory's 12 seasons. Given its popularity, it's safe to say that CBS will be willing to make that happen. If this pans out, however, Young Sheldon will have to undergo tremendous change as the focus of the series will be more on its titular character and his future adventures, and less on the Cooper family as a whole.
