Young Wallander: Kurt investigates his first case in Netflix series

Netflix series Young Wallander is going to be hitting Netflix this week. The show will be released in its entirety on Thursday, September 3 with viewers able to binge all six episodes in one go. Express.co.uk has everything you need to know about the filming locations and the settings for Young Wallander.

Where is Young Wallander set?

Young Wallander will serve as a prequel to author Henning Mankell’s novels.

The show will follow a young Kurt Wallander (played by Adam Pålsson) early on in his policing career.

Although author Mankell’s novels were set in the Nineties and early Noughts, the Netflix series brings the show up to date.

So, the action takes place in contemporary Sweden rather than the Seventies or Eighties.

Therefore, Young Wallander is more a modern-day reimagining of the Swedish detective rather than a pure prequel series.

The show will take place in the Swedish city of Malmö with the action occurring in various areas across the urban sprawl.

Malmö will be a character in itself as Wallander strives to fight crime and do right by its people.

This version of Malmö appears to be more violent as tensions around immigration bubble up with Young Wallander tapping into social issues affecting Sweden today.

Interestingly, despite the show being set in Sweden, most of the main cast is predominantly British.

The big exception to this is the eponymous detective who is portrayed by Swedish actor Pålsson.

After landing the role, Pålsson said: “I couldn’t be more honoured and thrilled to have the opportunity to play the young Kurt Wallander, and to explore the defining events in the life of this complex, driven protagonist, created by the brilliant Henning Mankell.

“With a terrific cast and creative team, I have every confidence that our new version will resonate both in Sweden and with audiences worldwide.”

Where is Young Wallander filmed?

Filming on Young Wallander started in 2019, however, the show wasn’t shot in Sweden.

Instead, the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius doubled up for Malmö, along with the suburban area of Šeškinė.

Šeškinė was built during the Soviet era in the 1970s with rising tower blocks and had the dark, moody atmosphere needed for the aesthetic of the show.

Jonas Špokas, the CEO of Baltic Locations and the supervising location manager for Young Wallander, said several regions in Vilnius were scouted out before Šeškinė was chosen.

Speaking to KFTV, he said: “The director decided to go for Šeškinė based on how strong of an impression the surroundings of it made on the screen.”

In fact, one of the flats was used to film in and doubled up at Wallander’s flat on the estate.

The programme-makers wanted to make the viewing experience as “immersive as possible” and “add layers of realism”.

The city was also chosen for its variety of locations which made it an ideal place to film in.

Vilnius was also used by HBO and Sky to stand in for Pripyat in the USSR for Chernobyl.

While Catherine the Great and The Last Czars on Netflix were also filmed in Lithuania.

The Vilnius University Botanical Gardens doubled up for Tokyo in The Tokyo Trial.
