Mar 27, 2010 120 0 Hello All, Please help. Had a SMF Darkside clutch fitted to an LCR a couple months back. Recently having trouble with 1st,2nd and Reverse. My mechanic bled the system and change the gearbox oil with genuine VW oil. The change feels better, but I am still having an issue with clutch travel. They suggested I upgrade the clutch cylinder looking on line the first one that popped up was in the states and pricey, from eurowise. Has anyone got any other recommendations or suggestions? Thanks in advance. Alal20v

Mar 27, 2010 120 0 Hello all, I am still running into trouble and would appreciate any advice. The master cyclinder was replaced and mechanic could see it was fractured at the pedal box. I took it for a spin this morning and again seemed better but not right. Car was in was in first gear when I started it the second time and it wouldn't come out of gear. My foot was to the floor. Rolled car slightly and took out and pushed back in the clutch and it came out of gear. I spoke with a gearbox specialist and he is going to take a look at the car, but from my description he thinks the clutch is not releasing... Thoughts ? Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalkal20v

Jun 17, 2011 4,164 711 bristol It sounds like the slave cylinder in the gearbox to me, either that or maybe there is still air in the system. I had the same symptoms and it was the slave. Last edited: Sep 13, 2016al20v

Mar 27, 2010 120 0 Yes I have thought about replacing that but the mechanic never suggested it. Going to visit a gearbox specialist see if he can shed some light on it. Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalkcocadave

Eurocarparts sell the slave cylinder for about £35 from memory.

Jun 17, 2011 4,164 711 bristol Shim mod may well help gear selection overall once this problem is fixed, but i don't think it will help if you can't get it in and out of gear with the clutch depressed, that is almost certainly the slave cylinder imo. http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/S...c278c16ad5936148716fc42a9dcb689b1f3a7f&000079 As for which shim you need i'll post a link when i find the thread Edit shim and cap http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GENUINE-B...f59e867&pid=100011&rk=2&rkt=2&sd=172058688364 Guide to fitting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E75I24cGxQY Last edited: Sep 13, 2016cocadave

Chances are that the complete thickness of the SMF verses the standard is probably out by a couple of mil...

Mar 27, 2010 120 0 back again, just to offer some background over a year ago I noticed a knocking sound from the clutch/flywheel and decided to replace the clutch, flywheel and slave cylinder. The kit was a Luk product, which i thought was a decent brand. Not even after a month the clutch was slipping. the assumption was there was too much power for the clutch. So with that I went looking for something that could take a bit more power. This lead me to the Darkside kit in opening post. when i looked at the old clutch that came out i could see signs of oil on the clutch face, which I believe was the cause for the slipping, but the dealer that fitted it was not taking responsibility so Darkside kit was fitted a couple months ago and it was bedded in as recommend. It has been great up on till the issue started. i ordered shim and cap from david, and should have it next week. today, i went to see another mechanic who is known more for gearbox and clutch problems. his money is it been the clutch at fault. when the car was in gear and clutch to the floor the car was still pulling away. so my question is where does that leave me, and what would you do? replace the shim, drive it again. or replace the slave as suggested? or replace the clutch and flywheel? the car has had very little miles put on it, and it not been raced.... i am kinda miffed that a 2nd kit has failed. doubt Darkside are going to want to know? Click to expand...Up to you mate, your car, your cash etc. However it still sounds like the slave cylinder to me.... If that is broken then the clutch won't work when you press the pedal down, which by the sounds of it is exactly what is happening.....as like you say the car pulls away even with the clutch fully down. The above symptom isn't going to be sorted by the shim mod imo, it simply removes some freeplay from the gearbox shaft, but if you want to try that first and you've got other transport until the shim arrives then you might as well give it a go i guess. I'd be happy to be proved wrong, lol. Do yourself a favour and take the car to a VW specialist mate, most of these clutch centres are run by pikeys that will just rip you off. I'm sure a VW specialist will say that the slave is at fault too, but if not then i'm sure they will track down the issue. While the gearbox is off i would get them to check the crankshaft and gearbox oil seals as it sounds like one or other is leaking oil into the clutch and causing your slipping issues. Either that or the broken slave is leaking clutch fluid into the clutch. Last edited: Sep 17, 2016 Show hidden low quality content You must log in or register to reply here.
