frosho F '06 V50 T5 - Alternator output intermittenetly cutting out, had it rebuilt, problem remains. Hi all, I started getting the 'Power System Service Urgent' message and battery light intermittently last week, so I hooked a multimeter up to the accessory socket and watched the voltage. Initially (cold starts) it would run fine at 14.5-14.7, but eventually the light came on and the voltage dropped to battery levels, somewhere in the 12.xx range. Sometimes it would pick back up as if nothing happened, and sometimes it wouldn't. The voltage slowly and steadily dropped if I continued to drive while the light was on, indicating a lack of alternator output. I figured the alternator was on its way out and had it rebuilt today while I was changing the timing belt. Once I got it all buttoned up, I took it out for a spin. To my delight, it ran great with no cam timing errors, but much to my dismay, the battery light came on again. Same symptoms as before - charged fine initially and dropped to 12.xx after maybe ten minutes of back road driving. I stopped to get gas, and it still wasn't charging once I restarted it. The light very briefly went off a couple times on the 15 minute drive back home, but the voltage was still low during these instances. Has anybody had issues like this that were not caused by a bad alternator? I'm going to call the shop tomorrow to find out exactly what they replaced. I opted for a full rebuild instead of just a repair job, so I would think all the major components are new. I'm really hoping to not have to take that thing out again, what a pain in the ass of a job it was. The timing of each episode makes me think it's a connection that degrades as it heats up, but I don't know where to start looking. If someone can tell me the role of the wire from the voltage regulator to the harness, and also the jumper wire at the regulator, that would be a good start. #1 · Jun 17, 2014 (Edited) '06 V50 T5 - Alternator output intermittenetly cutting out, had it rebuilt, problem remains. They need to bench test it longer to find the unit that is failing with heat. Volvo charge circuit is very basic as far as wiring goes. Diagrams #3 · Jun 17, 2014 Well, that's thoroughly upsetting. The intermittent nature of the fault is the whole reason I went for a full rebuild. I'll call the shop soon and see whether or not they swapped out the regulator. Thank you for the wiring diagrams. #4 · Jun 17, 2014 Just got off the phone with the shop. They said the stator was very burnt, and that they did NOT replace the voltage regulator. Apparently it is unavailable, even from their Nippon Denso supplier(s). Nice of them to tell me that before I spent all that time reinstalling it... They're looking into the cost of a completely new alternator for me, and they will credit the cost of the rebuild if I decide to go that route. I'm waiting for them to call me back now. #5 · Jun 17, 2014 The shop called me back about an hour ago... They said that they couldn't find me a new alternator. BUT, somehow, somewhere, they found a voltage regulator, and they're having it shipped in overnight. So I'll have to take more time off from work, yank the alternator out again, and bring it back to the shop so they can swap out the regulator. That is, unless somebody thinks I can swap the regulator out without removing the alternator from the car...? Anybody? I doubt it, but that would be sweet. #6 · Jun 17, 2014 This super common. That's why the cost of our alternators is so high. Check here. Website is a mess but they carry tons of stuff. #7 · Jul 1, 2014 Forgot to update this. I pulled the alternator back out, brought it to the shop, and they swapped out the regulator. Reinstalled it, and all is finally well with my charging system. Hopefully I'll never have to do that again. Insert Quotes Post Reply
