Learning Chinese is a wonderful adventure, it’s a bit complicated, it requires time and discipline, but suddenly, when all the tiny elements of the puzzle show the logic behind, in front of you there is a new world.

It’s quite easy to find material related to every day conversation, but it is much harder to find resources to introduce you to technical and scientific vocabulary, so I would like to summarize something I’ve learnt regarding the electronic technology language, hoping that it could be useful and interesting for other enthusiastic Chinese learners.

To introduce the technical wording, I would like to make a little trip inside a 电子设备 diànzǐ shèbèi, an electronic equipment.

Let’s consider a simple equipment, an old radio, a 收音机 shōu yīn jī, for this trip.

The first thing we enter in contact it is the casing, 外壳 wài ké, we must open it to see the electronic inside.

The hearth of the radio is the 电路板 diàn lù bǎn, the electrical circuit board, that can be called either 印制电路板 yìnzhì diàn lù bǎn or 印刷电路板 yìnshuā diàn lù bǎn, that means printed circuit board.

On the circuit board there are many 元件 yuán jiàn components, they are not placed randomly, but following an electrical scheme called 电路图 diàn lù tú.

Now let’s give a look in detail to the components.

The most common are probably the 电阻 diàn zù, the resistors. The resistors have different values and their unit of measure is 欧姆 oū mǔ (ohm).

Another common component is the 电容器 diàn róng qì, the capacitor, that is generally used for filtering purposes. The unit of measure for the capacitor value is the 法拉 fǎ lā (farad).

A very important role in the circuit is done by the 晶体管 jīng tǐ guǎn, the transistors, that have got three connection interfaces: 发射极 fā shè jí the emitter, 基极 jī jì the base, 集电极jí diàn jì the collector.

A combination of transistors is used to build amplifiers 放大器 fàng dà qì, they are used to amplify weak radio signals into usable electronic signals.

Moreover, on the circuit board we can see several 二机管 èr jí guǎn, the diodes, used to control the flow of the current, 电流 diàn liú.

Besides all these components, so common in the circuit, we must mention also the many connecting wires 导线 dǎo xiàn, that connect the board with other components, like 天线 tiān xiàn, the antenna, and 扬声器 yáng shèng qī, the loudspeaker.

So, at the end of our small trip, let’s summarize the 10 most important words we have found:

外壳 wài ké – casing

电路板 diàn lù bǎn – electronic circuit board

电路图 diàn lù tú – circuit diagram

电阻 diàn zù – resistors

电容器 diàn róng qì – capacitors

晶体管 jīng tǐ guǎn – transistors

二机管 èr jí guǎn – diodes

导线 dǎo xiàn – conducting wires

天线 tiān xiàn – antenna

电流 diàn liú – electrical current
