10 Money-Related Verbs That You Should Know In Vietnamese

In this lesson, we will learn a bunch of useful Vietnamese verbs that are often used when talking about money, such as to earn, to borrow, to lend and so on.

❶ kiếm tiền

Meaning: to earn money

• kiếm được bao nhiêu tiền? be able to earn how much money? (lit.)

• Một tháng bạn kiếm được bao nhiêu tiền? One month you're able to earn how much money? (lit.)

❷ tiêu tiền / xài tiền

Meaning: to spend money

• tiêu hơi nhiều tiền to spend a bit too much money

• Tháng này mình tiêu hơi nhiều tiền This month I spend a bit too much money

❸ tốn tiền

Meaning: to spend money (overly/wastefully)

• tốn nhiều tiền cho + [Noun] to spend money on something

• Cổ tốn nhiều tiền cho việc mua sắm She spends a lot of money on shopping

❹ để dành tiền / tiết kiệm tiền

Meaning: to save up money

• Mình đang để dành tiền I'm saving up money

• Mình đang để dành tiền để mua nhà I'm saving up money (in order) to buy a house

❺ mất tiền

Meaning: to lose money

• bị mất tiền to have money being lost/stolen (passive)

• Hôm qua mình bị mất tiền trong ví Yesterday I lost money in the wallet

❻ mượn tiền / vay tiền

Meaning: to borrow money / loan money from someone

• mượn bao nhiêu tiền? to borrow how much money? (lit.)

• Bạn muốn mượn bao nhiêu tiền? You want to borrow how much money? (lit.)

❼ cho mượn tiền / cho vay tiền

Meaning: to lend money / loan money to someone

• cho mượn ít tiền to lend a bit of money

• Cho mình mượn ít tiền được không? Lend me a bit of money can? (lit.)

❽ nợ tiền / thiếu tiền

Meaning: to owe money

• thiếu bao nhiêu tiền? (lit.) to owe how much money?

• Mình còn thiếu bạn bao nhiêu tiền? I still owe you how much money? (lit.)

❾ trả tiền / thanh toán (less casual)

Meaning: to pay (money)

• trả tiền cho bữa tối to pay (money) for dinner

• Để mình trả tiền cho bữa tối Let me pay for dinner

➓ đổi tiền

Meaning: to change/exchange money

• đổi đô Mỹ sang tiền Việt to change US dollars (over) to Vietnamese currency

• Mình muốn đổi đô Mỹ sang tiền Việt I want to change US dollars (over) to Vietnamese currency
