I've been looking for a current evaluation of these lenses and especially if the early issues (seemed firmware related) with the 16-80mm have been resolved. I like the reach of the 16-80 as it aligns well with the 24-105,, I had with my FF Canon DSLR. I'd appreciate feedback on reasons to choose one or the other (aside from the range..which is use specific). I'm not concerned with the slower 16-80 F4.

I've never found the 18-55 to live up to its billing. It's well built & fast, but IMHO it's actually the lowest-performing lens in this range Fuji makes. It's not a bad lens at all (pretty good actually), but even the lowly 16-50 outperformed it optically when I compared the two and it's very middle of the road for a kit lens in terms of optics, it's standout items are speed & build, and the latter is questionable today given it's not WR. I'd take the 16-80 on spec, I've not looked at it too closely but as long as it can match the 16-50 in performance it's a better choice IMHO. If I was going to take something other than the 16-80 and didn't need speed, I'd get the tiny, surprisingly good optically and dirt cheap 16-50.

I own both and both are outstanding lenses. Both outperform the price asked for them by a very large margin. They are "zoom"lenses so image quality does not match the prime lenses, but they do come close. I have used the 18-55 for many years and taken some of my best photos with it. The 18-55 is a lot faster at the wider ranges and would be my choice for lower light situations. The 16-80 is a slower lens so it requires longer shutter speeds. But with that said the Image Stabilization is ABSOLUTELY unbelievable. I have taken handheld shots at such slow speeds it just blows me away. The truth is since the 16-80 came in, I have not taken it off the camera. And I do own a long list of Fuji lenses. The versatility of the 16-80 is outstanding making it most likely the best all around lens out there. Oh, did I forget to mention, the minimum focus distance is only 11 inches for those close up shots. However it is slow at f4 the 18-55 is a faster lens also very versatile. I doubt you can go wrong with either - especially if you wait for a sale.

I've owned the 18-55mm and found it to be one of Fuji's sharpest best performing lenses ever. However, I think there may have been two different production runs of this lens, one in Japan and one in China? (please correct me if I'm wrong on this) Having read many reviews on the 18-55 that back up my finding's on it performance, perhaps "maws" had a bad copy of it? When the 16-80 was announced, I was excited to get one, but since reading many of the not-so-good reviews, I've held off. Maybe a firmware release will fix some of the obvious problems. In the past I've been burnt badly by falling Fuji prices, (paid $2160.00 for my H1 w/grip) so I'll wait for the price to come down on the 16-80, with Fuji it's just a matter of time.

For the price of 16-80mm, I would go with a used 16-55mm.Edited on Feb 03, 2020 at 10:45 PM · View previous versions

18-55 is the best bang for your buck ... period. I don't know if this has anything to do with lens origin, but my early Made in Japan copy is one of the sharpest zooms I ever used and this includes various Nikon and Canon top echelon glass. 16-55 is amazing performer as well but for me the size and weight is a deal breaker. My situation is that I bought the 18-55 as a kit lens with the x-t3 28 days ago and the price was good. Ive done all my test shooting with the 35/f1.4 and 23/2 (fabulous lenses). Now that the sale is back on with Fuji, I could actually return the whole kit and either rebuy the camera only or with the 16-80. Unfortunately, I never anticipated Id return the 18-55 as Ive heard great things about it (although mine is made in the Philippines). Im drawn by the reach but am a stickler for IQ (coming from shooting Canon L Glass). Seems I need to do some quick testing tomorrow (having only one day to return if a choose a different option)

IF I could only have ONE lens for my Fuji, it would be the 18-55.

I'll mostly use my zoom as a daytime walkabout lens and for landscapes. Is the edge sharpness better in the 18-55?

I would suggest heading over to Flickr and search for images taken with those lenses. Because what is deemed acceptable is so subjective, you can decide for yourself that way. Personally I have a had good luck with the 18-55. I rented a 16-55 and found that for me, there wasn't enough of a difference to justify the price difference. Here's a link to a couple of photos I've taken with the 18-55: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1097477/129#15068998

I'm actually not on the fence with the 16-55; more so with the 16-80mm F4. It's a more versatile focal length. However, I am getting the impression I may give up some edge and corner sharpness on that one (and certainly some speed).

Thank you for the kind words. From what I have read, you're right about the corner and edge sharpness, at least until you stop down a bit. It's weird that there are so mny differing opinions. Whether you like Ken Wheeler (aka The Angry Photographer), he seems to know his stuff, and he rates the 16-80 very highly. Perhaps consider renting one?

You like the reach of the 16-80 f4 and are not concerned with the slowness of the f4 aperture. So why not just get the 16-80? Doesn't seem like the 18-55 has any advantages for you.

Ryukyu wrote: ..... Perhaps consider renting one? The challenge is I have this unexpected/unplanned window to return what I have and re-order the kit with the 16-80mm. Ordered with a kit, I end up with the 16-80mm for quite a bit less ($500) than the lens only cost ($800). The 16-80 sells for quite a bit more used than the 18-55. Essentially have to decide what I'm doing today. Unfortunately, I focused on testing out the two primes I bought (which are great)..not thinking this scenario would become an option.

The 18-55 is a very good lens, but it's still the worst of the Fuji's in that space IMHO (with the caveat that I cannot speak directly on the 16-80)
