There is no way to know which carafe is full, which is half full, and which- when pushed- will splatter out only the tiniest bit. Such is the life of a gas station coffee drinker.
Stuck somewhere below the hautiness of Start Bucks, the gas station coffee drinker must fight for creamer, non-dairy creamer (how the hell is THAT done?), sweetener (God forbid you want a sugar-free substitute with a name you can actually recognize), and those oddly-shaped and not quite effective coffee stirrer-thingies that come in some pretty odd color combinations (green and lavender anyone?)
The cleanliness of the cups is often suspect- who grabbed a cup then changed his mind- but the cleanliness of the lids…well, now, there’s a TB outbreak waiting to happen. Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow will find it hard to contain their chubby, exuberant fingers when confronted with small, round plastic lids that are packed in a coil-spring-loaded device that all but projects them out. Ah, playground AND beverage center.
Many stations are so proud of the brand of coffee they sell that they advertise it outside their store on some 40-foot banner. NOW PROUDLY SERVING Green Mountain/Baronet/Bengal Traders/Lowest Bidder insert name here.
Cumberland Farms has its own brand, and the Farmhouse Blend, in the right hands, is an absolutely divine imbibement. However, that means one must go INTO the Cumby’s, and some of the clerks are addicted to Heavy Metal (music genre- not movie or printed item), and there’s something about stirring one’s coffee while the oldies heavy metal plays “Calling Dr. Love.” Really, Genie Baby, put the make-up back ON!
There’s also the engagement factor to station coffee as one must go into the store…and maybe have to talk to the metal heads. I like metal, but the metal heads? Not so much. If the music inspired them to make change…or change the carafe, well, then, maybe.
