The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has been in production for 38 very successful years. With the introduction of the 2017 Mercedes-Benz G 550 4x4 Squared, the G-Class returns to its roots as an off-road monster, not fit for the freeway, or a parking lot, for that matter. Although it has the same engine as the G 550 SUV, there are many key differences that might affect a buying decision.

As the entry-level G-Class SUV, the G 550 comes with a 4.0-liter Biturbo V8 engine. This same engine is used for the G 550 4x4 Squared, putting out 416 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels via three completely independent, locking differentials! No other car on the road can say this. On the inside, drivers are also treated to many of the same luxuries as in the G 550 such as an 8-inch infotainment screen with COMAND® Navigation. So where is the cream filling? The big differences have to do with the exterior dimensions, which greatly alter the clearance and approach angles of the iconic SUV.
