Honda recently launched the updated CB400X in Japan with a few crucial tweaks. However, It still sports the same motor and design for 2022. While it’s currently sold only in Japan, we already have the KTM 390 Adventure as a seasoned offering in the same segment. So let’s compare the two ADVs and see which one’s better, on paper.
Engine
| Specifications | CB400X | 390 Adventure |
| Engine | 399cc, in-line twin cylinder, liquid-cooled, 4-valve motor | 373cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled, 4-valve engine |
| Power | 46PS @ 9000rpm | 43.5PS @ 9000rpm |
| Torque | 38Nm @ 7500rpm | 37Nm @ 7000rpm |
| Gearbox | 6-speed, slip-and-assist clutch | 6-speed, slip-and-assist clutch |
The Honda CB400X takes the cake with a marginal difference in terms of power and torque. However, it's the refinement and the way the Honda delivers its power which should help it be a better tourer. The KTM’s single-cylinder motor is more frantic, which more or less provides a bit more of a raw experience, and with that there are some vibrations that one will experience.
Underpinnings
| Specifications | CB400X | 390 Adventure |
| Frame | Steel diamond type | Steel trellis frame |
| Front suspension | 41mm Showa SFF-BP (separate function fork big piston) | 43mm WP Apex USD, 170 mm travel |
| Rear suspension | Monoshock | WP Apex monoshock, preload adjustable, 177mm travel |
| Front brake | 320mm dual disc | 320mm disc |
| Rear brake | 240mm disc | 230mm disc |
| Front tyre | 110 / 80- 19 | 100/90 - 19 |
| Rear tyre | 160 / 60- 17 | 130/80 - 17 |
Even in terms of suspension and braking, the 2022 Honda CB400X aces the department. It not only gets better springs, but should also offer more braking prowess from its dual front disc brake setup. The KTM, meanwhile, would offer better directional transitions and be an eager handler, thanks to its slimmer tyres, and another crucial aspect that we cover in the next point.
Dimensions
| Specifications | CB400X | 390 Adventure |
| Wheelbase | 1,435mm | 1,430mm |
| Ground clearance | 150mm | 200mm |
| Fuel tank capacity | 17.17-liters | 14.5-litres |
| Seat height | 800mm | 855mm |
| Kerb weight | 199kg | 177kg |
The shorter wheelbase, 22kg less kerb weight and a more involving rider’s triangle should make the 390 ADV the better handler as well. Also, it has more ground clearance than the CB400X, which should make it a better off-roader too.
But Honda has equipped the CB400X with a 17.7-litre fuel tank, which is 2.67 litres larger than the KTM, so expect lesser fuel stops on long journeys. And its low seat height should also be more convenient for shorter riders to put their feet down.
Features
| CB400X | 390 Adventure | |
| Traction Control | No | Yes |
| ABS | Yes | Yes |
| Quickshifter | No | Yes |
| Bluetooth Connectivity | No | Yes |
| Navigation | No | Yes |
| Charging Socket | No | Yes |
| Crash Protection | No | Yes |
In terms of features, the KTM 390 Adventure is miles ahead of the Honda. It ticks every box mentioned below while the CB400X doesn’t even get a TFT display, let alone connectivity options. Not to mention, the traction control system makes the 390 Adventure a bit more safer as well.
Price and Verdict
| CB400X | 390 Adventure |
| JPY 8,58,000 (approximately Rs 5.72 lakh, excluding taxes) | Rs 3,28,443 (ex-showroom, Delhi) |
Lastly, there’s an exponential price difference between the Honda CB400X and the KTM 390 Adventure. Overall, the Austrian ADV offers way more features and almost the same amount of power without burning a hole in your wallet. So if you had to pick one of the two ADVs, the KTM 390 Adventure would be the sensible choice.
