2022 Volkswagen GTI And Golf R Pricing Trims, U.S. Availability

Volkswagen announced U.S. pricing for its newly refreshed 2022 Golf GTI and Golf R Wednesday, giving us an idea of just how much you'll need to shell out to own two of the best hot hatches on the market today. With destination fees factored in, the 2022 Volkswagen GTI will have a starting price of $30,540, while the all-wheel-drive Golf R will start at $44,640.

Buyers of the GTI will have three choices of trim in the U.S.: S, SE, and Autobahn. Base S-level cars get 18-inch alloy wheels, LED lighting, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a single-zone climate control system, and an 8.25-inch infotainment screen with a seven-speaker sound system. Purists will be happy to hear the Plaid sport seats are standard.

Upgrade to the $35,290 SE trim and you get things like a sunroof, an illuminated grille, a bigger 10-inch infotainment screen, a 480-watt Harmon/Kardon nine-speaker audio system, and optional leather seating. Go for the $38,990 Autobahn trim, and you'll also get 19-inch wheels on summer performance tires, adaptive damping, leather seating, ventilated front seats, and three-zone climate control.

All trims use the latest version of VW's EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four making 241 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, sending thrust to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. Want to upgrade to the seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic? That'll cost you an extra $800.

The 315-hp Golf R will be offered in one fully-loaded trim for the United States. Adaptive damping and the newest version of VW's 4Motion all-wheel-drive come standard, complete with torque vectoring to help you fly through corners. There are 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in summer tires, flanked by 14-inch cross-drilled front brake rotors with blue-painted dual-piston calipers. Inside you'll find things like a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel with R-specific shifter paddles, heated and ventilated front Nappa leather seats, and heated rear seats. Like the GTI, the Golf R comes standard with a stick, with the DSG available as an $800 add-on.

Volkswagen expects the 2022 Golf GTI and Golf R to hit dealers starting in the fourth quarter of 2021.
