2022 Volvo XC90: A Trim Comparison - Auto Review Hub

Volvo is known for luxury, and the XC90 certainly delivers—all without being overly flashy. This mid-size SUV (the largest Volvo currently offers) is also fairly eco-friendly. It’s made so that 85% of its parts are recyclable, and up to 95% of the vehicle is recoverable. It offers three trim levels. Each trim level also comes with a couple of engine and powertrain configurations. We’ll look at all of them to help you decide what’s right for you.

Volvo XC90 Trim Comparison

The top-tier Volvo midsize SUV returns for 2024 but comes mostly unchanged from last year’s model. Nevertheless, drivers will choose between three trim levels, including three hybrid variations. Check out what the XC90 has to offer!

Core

The 2024 Volvo XC90 Momentum is the basic XC90 trim. Of course, since it is Volvo we’re talking about, even the basic trim is going to cost a fair amount. It comes loaded with a solid array of features, though. First, however, drivers will choose a seating configuration: six or seven seats, starting at $56,000. The XC90 has two seats in the first and third rows. A second-row bench seat is the typical seven-seat configuration. The 6-seat style features second-row captain’s chairs and is more expensive.

Engine Options

Then, we move on to engine options. The XC90 Momentum has B5 or B6 hybrid powertrain options paired with specific drivetrains. The B5 engine is a 2.0-liter I-4 capable of 247 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The  EPA fuel economy rating is 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, which means it has one of the best gas mileage for a midsize SUV. The B5 is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and comes with all-wheel-drive.

The optional B6 engine comes with an extra boost of power in the form of a turbo-supercharged four-cylinder engine. It produces 295 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Because of this, the combined fuel economy drops to 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. The B6 engine will cost you an additional $4,900.

Features and Packages

When it comes to standard features, the XC90 Core features 19-inch six-spoke turbine silver alloy wheels and dual integrated tailpipes. The rearview mirror caps are color-coordinated to the body of the vehicle. The interior features leatherette upholstery, a 10-speaker high-performance audio system, and a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and built-in navigation. A standard panoramic moonroof and quad-zone automatic climate control provide superior comfort all year round.

Volvo is known for its safety features, and the base trim doesn’t disappoint. Among the features offered are blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning and lane keeping assist. These features are designed to help keep you alert on the road but they aren’t a substitute for it. Features like Forward collision warning, road sign detection, pedestrian detection and rear parking sensors will also assist you in this manner. Other driver assistance features include adaptive cruise control and adaptive headlights.

Optional packages include the Climate package which offers heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel and headlamp cleaners, and the Protection Package Premier with First Aid Kit, rubber floor mats, wheel locks, a stainless steel bumper, and more.

Plus

The Plus trim starts at $59,900. This model includes all of the standard equipment with the Core model and come paired with either the B5 or B6 hybrid powertrain. Luxury upgrades include genuine leather upholstery, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel and a 14-speaker stereo. And on top of that, you’ll get a 360-degree parking camera system and 20-inch wheels.

Ultimate

The 2024 Volvo XC90 Ultimate, the mid-level luxury-focused trim with a standard B6 engine, runs at $69,400. This trim adds superior full-grain Nappa leather upholstery with ventilation in the front seats. The audio system is upgraded to a Harmon Kardon stereo system, and you’ll also get a heads-up display. The Ultimate also sits on 21-inch wheels and has a 360-degree parking camera.

In the way of packages, you have the option for the Protection Package Premier and Lounge package with a Nubuck headliner and massage front seats.

Recharge

The 2024 Volvo XC90 Recharge trims are all about fuel economy and performance increases  – with a sportier look to go with them. The Core, Plus, and Ultimate trims are all available as Recharge models.

The only engine option is the T8 eAWD Recharge Plug-In Hybrid. With the battery fully charged, drivers can opt to coast around town for up to 36 miles on electric-only energy and no emissions. After the battery depletes, it takes about six hours to recharge. When paired with gas power, the Recharge gets a combined equivalent of 66 MPG.
