2023 Mercedes-AMG G63 4x4 Squared Revealed - CarExpert
Mercedes-Benz is rounding out its G-Class range with the special edition Mercedes-AMG G63 4×4 Squared.
Like the previous-generation G500 4×4 Squared, there are portal axles and a higher ride height for superior off-road performance.
However, the new Squared follows the rest of the second-generation G-Class range in adopting independent front suspension.
The production G63 4×4 Squared was revealed on the G-Class Private Lounge online portal, though Mercedes-Benz hasn’t released full technical specifications.
Mercedes-Benz Australia has also said there’s no news to announce regarding a possible Australian launch.
“It’s only available for a limited time, so it’s really the last of its kind,” said Toni Mäntele, head of product management for the G-Class, in the reveal video.
That appears to suggest this will be the ne plus ultra of petrol G-Wagens. We know Mercedes-Benz is readying an electric G-Class, previewed by the 2021 Concept EQG and expected in 2024.
Unlike the more tarmac-oriented G63, with which it shares its 430kW/850Nm twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8, the 4×4 Squared has been developed with off-roading in mind.
It features permanent all-wheel drive and boasts a wading depth of 910mm, a ramp angle of 40 degrees, and 351mm of ground clearance.
In contrast, the G400d has 283mm of ground clearance, while the G63 AMG has 238mm.
It rides on 22-inch forged alloy wheels, while a roof-mounted spoiler with driving lights is standard and a roof rack and rear ladder are optional.
Carbon-fibre has been applied liberally, with the material used for the protective door strips, spare wheel carrier cover, wheel arch extensions and roof-mounted spoiler.
This extends to the cabin, where carbon-fibre has been used on the doors, centre console and around the dual screens.
There’s a digital rear-view mirror, while Mercedes-Benz says additional ambient lighting has been employed in the air vents.
The previewed examples are finished in Hyacinth Red magno and Green Hell magno, the latter named after the Nürburgring Nordschleife, however Mercedes-Benz says there’s a range of 40 colours to choose from.
Mercedes-Benz says it’s the most customisable G-Class yet, and you can even specify finishes like a wood floor for the boot.
The G63 AMG 4×4 Squared isn’t the first extravagant G-Class edition.
What started out as a no-nonsense vehicle for the German military has become a symbol of conspicuous consumption and the vehicle of choice for celebrities like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kim Kardashian and Britney Spears.
To that end, Mercedes-Benz has released ever more ostentatious variants, such as the wild G63 AMG 6×6 and the Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet.
