Ian Johnston I I am new to Subarus in general, now have an H6 Outback, just wondering for future reference how much better is the 3.6 in power, economy, reliability, versus the 3.0?? Sorry if this has been asked before, still trying to work out the forum. #1 · Nov 29, 2013 I am new to Subarus in general, now have an H6 Outback, just wondering for future reference how much better is the 3.6 in power, economy, reliability, versus the 3.0?? I know things can be engineered to run and combust more efficiantly but 3.0 is less than 3.6. I do not have any real worl experience to say either way though. #3 · Nov 29, 2013 On paper, the 3.6 can develop a few more horsies than the last version of the 3.0. Not a big difference. Of note- there is a bigger difference in power between the early 3.0 and the last generation 3.0. For economy, the 3.6 is the hands-down winner: it's engineered to run on regular gas, where the 3.0 was set up for premium. Reliability: the jury's out. The 3.0 is Subaru's most dependable engine. The 3.6 may eventually take that title away, but it's only been offered for 4 years now. Early indications are good. #4 · Nov 29, 2013 I think the big difference is torque. My 3.0R is 245 HP/ 215 TQ. The 3.6 is 256 HP / 247 TQ. The EZ30R has 33 HP on the old EZ30D, but only 5 lb-ft of additional torque. I notice a significant difference in power between the two, but I suspect more of that is related to the fact that it's got a 5-speed auto instead of the 4-speed. 0 Reply #5 · Nov 29, 2013 my friend thinks the EZ30 is so much better than the EZ36. but then again, i have the EJ25. the 6 cylinder offers only 300 lbs more towing capacity, is much more expensive, has a less smooth transmission, and consumes more fuel. i couldn't justify the much higher cost for the "better" engine. #6 · Nov 29, 2013

The EZ30R does rev higher. Redline is at 7k versus I think 6.5k on the EZ36. Not sure if that translates to "better," but it is an engine that likes to rev. Can't think of any other advantages that the 3.0 would have over the 3.6. Show more replies 0 Reply #7 · Nov 29, 2013 The issue is torque. Peak torque values will occur long before redline. Shouldn't have to wind it out. #8 · Nov 29, 2013 Mine is the 245hp 3.0, and 5 speed auto. Was a manual available on the 6cyl engines?? I am happy so far with my fuel economy( my other cars are either V8, or turbo 6cyl). I gave it a boot full the other day, and couldnt believe the 7,000rpm:gasp: Smooth as though. I have a Lexus SC400, and I thought that was smooth at revs. #9 · Nov 29, 2013

Not in the USA, but it was paired with a 5-spd manual in some other markets. 0 Reply #11 · Nov 30, 2013 The EZ30D can rev higher, if you reprogram it. These engines love high rpm. The 3.6R gets similar fuel economy as the 3.0R. Getting on either one sucks it down and kicks you back in the seat. They can also be boosted easily. See Raptor Superchargers And Project Veloci - Club Liberty #12 · Nov 30, 2013 I like the look of that Raptor setup :D. Although I should leave this car alone, not like my other hotted up ones :( Insert Quotes Post Reply
