RyanR R Hi all, I'm getting ready to take care of all the 150K mile stuff on the 2011 XC90. I know Volvo says to do the rubber alternator coupler. Does this one need replacing in practice? Does anyone replace the alternator's decoupler pulley? I'll definitely replace the one that drives the accessory belt. I'll have the manifold off for another reason, so doing alternator stuff isn't much deeper a dive. That said, all the rebuilt alternators (most are $300) I've seen come with the decoupler pulley installed, which begs the question if it's worth spending the money on the decoupler pulley. That question makes me wonder how long these alternators last. If many moons, then it's worth doing the decoupler pulley... if not, I'll wait for the alternator to go, and maybe get a used spare from a salvage yard. Are the brushes replaceable? On my older Volvos, worn brushes are all that really goes wrong on Bosch/Denso alternators. Sorry for the rambling post. Any thoughts would be most appreciated! Thanks! -Ryan #1 · Feb 13, 2019 Hi all, I'm getting ready to take care of all the 150K mile stuff on the 2011 XC90. I know Volvo says to do the rubber alternator coupler. I have seen one alternator pulley seize. I have seen a handful of READ clutches fail. And I've replaced more alternators than any of those other items. Not sure I'd replace it if it isn't bad but that's your call. While you have it out, remove the bolt on that drives the rubber coupler and put some loctite on it. They like to come loose. #3 · Feb 17, 2019 Thanks very much! Sounds like I should just wait for the alternator to go. Any guesstimate as to how many miles these alternators last? Thanks! -Ryan #4 · Feb 17, 2019 If the alternator is coming off I'd replace it or at least change the bearings and brushes. Give it a spin, probably you can already hear the bearings. #5 · Feb 18, 2019 Interesting! I'm surprised these alternators would use up bearings so quickly. There's really no lateral load on the 3.2L's alt pulley. Of course, I'm inexperienced with the newer engines. I *was* able to find a Bosch VR with brushes for the 180A alt. It's pretty cheap. I gotta double check which alternator I have. Thanks! -Ryan 0 Reply #6 · Feb 18, 2019 I don't know what his post is based on. I don't think I've ever replaced an alternator on the inline 6 for bearings making noise. #7 · Feb 18, 2019 I'm not specific to Volvo but my experience with alternators is that for me they have seldom gone over 200k miles. Tech you say you have seen a pulley seize. Was that not from a seized bearing? #8 · Feb 18, 2019 The pulley is a one way clutch. The one I had seized was not related to a bearing problem. We transfer the pulley to the new alternator during replacement. I checked it before swapping and found it was seized. #9 · Feb 18, 2019 (Edited) I have changed a few alternators and usually due to bearing failure but the only mileages I remember was 224k kms (140k miles) for a 98 GM and 145k miles on an early Prestolite alternator. I am interested in knowing what is the purpose of the one way clutch? We were lucky in getting a new alternator on warranty at 80k kms. on the XC90. There was a little noise in it from what I thought was maybe a piece of paper from the windings rubbing on something. That didn't fix the real noise and they ended up also changing the compressor. #10 · Feb 18, 2019 http://www.eurekamagazine.co.uk/des...nology/overrunning-alternator-pulley-improves-internal-combustion-engine/39568/ Here is some info on the one way clutch. Volvo has used them for a while. #11 · Feb 18, 2019 Many Thanks to Tech! I'm used to 80A or 100A Bosch alternators on my RWD Volvos. They go 250K miles before needing brushes, at which point I just swap the VR/brush pack and press on. I'll try to do the VR and decoupler this summer as under the manifold is going to be it's own dive into the engine from the READ stuff. Still need to sleuth this out a bit more to be sure, but I believe the 180A XC90 alt uses the Bosch F-00M-346-098 voltage regulator. Thanks again! -Ryan Insert Quotes Post Reply
