#1 · Dec 11, 2017 Hey all, Just sold my '08 X5 4.4i and I'm about to purchase a '12 model. Do any of you have experience with the xDrive 50i engine problem? How are they after 50k miles? I'm looking at a 50i with 52k. I would probably take out an extended warranty (either with BMW or a 3rd party), and I know the 50i can be a time bomb. I loved my V8 x5, the sound of the engine and just how quick it was. But reliability was less than stellar. I know the 50i can be pretty bad too, so do any of you have thoughts on how much the extra horsepower is worth compared the 3.5i model? Did any of you have trouble choosing between the v8 and the v6? I know the service bulletin needs to be done on the '12 50i models, but other things like valve stem seals, etc, also tend to go. There are a bunch of documented issues but I just wanted to see if any of you were over 50k miles and about when the trouble starts with these things? Thanks for any input! The 35i can be plenty quick (they're roughly as fast as an E70 4.8i, so definitely faster than an E53 4.4i), and if you really want to go faster there are tunes/piggybacks out there that will give you a large bump in HP (30-40 HP seems easy). There's enough stuff to go wrong on an 35i, no reason to complicate things with an N63 engine that has A LOT of weak points, even by BMW standards. #3 · Dec 11, 2017 The 3.5i with 300hp is no slouch but it does give up 100hp to the V-8. If you can stomach a potential fatal issue with the V-8, go for it! #4 · Dec 11, 2017 i have had the 50i for a year and a half with 102400 miles and so far only engine oil pan gasket leaked and fixed under CPO, now the rubber turbo coolant lines need replaced because of the extra heat generated by the engine. i can fix hoses. I am at the Maintaining for year or 2 more before i get rid of for a new vehicle so things will have to be replaced like Thrust arms and brakes. HOWEVER if you buy a 50i be aware of the recalls for front driveshaft and airbag. OIL CONSUMPTION IS AN ISSUE, quart or 2 every 700-1000 miles. BUY WITH A EXCLUSION WARRANTY also , other words ask them what is excluded. Do that if you wish to enjoy the extra power as it is nice to have. Know this , i would NOT buy it again. GOOGLE BMW bulletins for N63 engine. called CCP or customer care package. Good Luck #5 · Dec 11, 2017 Also, I'd add that the fuel mileage of the 50i was pretty atrocious. In a city/hwy test loop I did in both a 50i and 35i, I got 14 mpg on the 50i, and 20 mpg in the 35i. I average about 25-27 mpg in all hwy driving in my 35i, and about 17-18 mpg in city driving, so I'd say that's a pretty reasonable ~50/50 test loop. I'd hate to see the 100% city gas mileage in a 50i with waiting at a lot of lights! #6 · Dec 12, 2017 FWIW I am approaching 130,000 on my 2012 5.0. My experience has been great. Little beyond regular maintenance until recently. Last month I had a coolant leak requiring the coolant line replacement. I also replaced the expansion tank preemptively). Also control arms (which are really a wear item). I get 19 mpg according to the trip computer (over the last 3,500 miles). They have depreciated to the point you get a lot of value for the money. It’s a used car so a crapshoot no matter what. Life is short. The extra horsepower and the sound of the v8is a drug. Etc. #7 · Dec 12, 2017 Short answer no. Just buy a 35i #8 · Dec 12, 2017 No! Get 35i! This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread. Insert Quotes Post Reply
