In this article a Mycenaean pottery sherd from Liman Tepe is discussed. The piece which is locally produced probably belongs to a Ring-based crater (FS 281). Comparative studies with other similar sherds suggest that warriors aboard a ship are depicted. As one of the few examples of its period decorated in a similar way, this sherd has been dated to the early or middle phases of LH III C, belonging to the period after the collapse of the Hittite Empire in Anatolia and Mycenaean kingdoms in mainland Greece. The depictions on this sherd are highly significant as it contributes to the corpus of evidence for migrations from western to eastern Mediterranean and unrest which characterize the period.

What similarities exist between the Liman Tepe and Bademgediği Tepesi sherds?addThe study shows that the pictorial representations on both the Liman Tepe and Bademgediği Tepesi sherds depict warriors and warships, suggesting a common artistic tradition, particularly with 'hedgehog-helmet' figures. The artistic elements, such as the figures facing opposite directions, align closely, indicating interconnected cultural narratives during LH III C.
How do ship depictions differ between Liman Tepe and Kynos examples?addLiman Tepe's ship images prominently feature oarsmen, while Kynos examples utilize stylized semicircles to represent oarsmen, lacking direct human figures. This distinction highlights variations in artistic representation and cultural emphasis within naval depictions in the Aegean during the Late Bronze Age.
What implications arise from the presence of Mycenaean pottery at Liman Tepe?addThe presence of Mycenaean pottery at Liman Tepe, displaying connections to Mainland Greece, Crete, and Cyprus, reflects extensive cultural interaction during the turbulent period following the Hittite collapse. The finds indicate Liman Tepe's significant role as a hub of cultural exchange in the late Bronze Age.
When was the Liman Tepe sherd likely produced, based on excavated artifacts?addThe Liman Tepe sherd, associated with warrior figures, is likely dated to early/middle LH III C, around 1200-1150 BCE, based on comparable artifacts from the region. This period overlaps with extensive upheaval in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean, underscoring the historical significance of the find.
What characterizes the decorative style of the Liman Tepe vessel sherd?addThe decorative style of the Liman Tepe sherd is characterized by a palette of dark greyish-brown and light-pale slips, with rich textural details and depiction of a warrior in profile. Such stylistic traits align with the broader Aegean practices during the Late Bronze Age, showcasing shared artistic motifs.
