The aim of A Level Economics is to guide students in cultivating a broad understanding of Economics. The H1 Economics paper consists of two compulsory Case Study Questions, each question carrying a weightage of 45 marks. There are two main types of questions, Data Response questions which are typically short-answer questions, and Higher-order Questions which are similar to essay questions.

3.1.1 Challenges Faced in H1 Economics

In the A Level H1 Economics paper, H1 Economics students tend to struggle fulfilling the requirements of the questions, especially the short-answer questions. This is especially so if students are unable to distinguish the various command words being used in the question, which dictate how the question should be answered. For instance, the command word “discuss” implies that students should provide both sides of the argument, which is both their thesis and their anti-thesis. On the other hand, “explain” means that the question only requires students to mention one side of the argument, without a need to evaluate other perspectives. If students do not recognise the requirements of the different command words, they will end up not answering the question and will not earn marks regardless of how familiar they are with the content.

3.1.2. How To Score in H1 Economics

Thus, in order to score in H1 Economics, students should place due emphasis on their examination skills and learn the different question requirements, on top of achieving content mastery of the various economic concepts. For instance, students should recognise that when 2-mark data-response questions ask students to describe a change in an economic trend, they are expected to identify the general trend to attain the first mark, and provide a meaningful refinement to the trend to earn the second mark as an unspoken rule.

All H2 Economics students are required to sit for 2 papers, each paper being 2 hours 15 minutes in duration. In Paper 1, students are required to answer 2 Case Study Questions.
