1. An Overview to A Level Economics
The A Level Economics course is aimed to provide students with the Twenty-first Century Competencies such as Sound Decision Making and Reasoning to thrive in our ever-changing world, done through an economic lens. Through honing their Critical Thinking and Creative Thinking skills, students will be able to ride the wave of immense globalisation, rapid technological advancements and demographic changes.
For many students, A Level Economics can be seen as a challenge due to the sheer amount of content that questions can test, be it in the Paper 1 Case Study Questions (CSQ) or the Paper 2 Essay Questions. As such, students may struggle to refine their content knowledge. Another issue that A Level Economics students may struggle with is pin-pointing the type of question and the nature of the issue being tested in the question, especially in CSQ where a lot of the questions are based on applying Economic concepts to the given case study. As a result, many students may end up writing out-of-point and not answering the question, and get penalised with a low score.
With the rapid pace at which content is being taught in schools, together with the aforementioned challenges, many JC Economics will end up struggling to keep up with the A Level Economics syllabus. This often leads to students feeling demoralised and demotivated to study, causing their results to drop even more. Here at MindFlex, we believe that there is a way to mitigate some of the above issues: by seeking additional tutoring help early in the academic year and by following the advice in this Complete Guide to A Level Economics, students will be able to build a strong foundation in the subject.

2. Objectives of A Level Economics
The aim of A Level Economics is to guide students in cultivating a broad understanding of Economics. Both H1 and H2 A Level Economics students are expected to have a strong understanding of Economic theories, concepts and principles and to use these tools to critically analyse and evaluate various economic issues. Moreover, students are expected to view an economic issue through the lens of different economic agents, on both a Microeconomic and Macroeconomic scale. All in all, logical and critical thinking is required for students to make well-reasoned, structured arguments to support their rational decisions.
The following Assessment Objectives are aimed towards encouraging students to hone the aforementioned skills:
1. Knowledge and Understanding
Students are expected to have a comprehensive understanding and knowledge of the various Economic theories and concepts.
2. Interpretation and Evaluation of Information
Students are to learn how to interpret and process information in various forms, be it textual, graphical or numerical. In addition, they are expected to know how to make inferences that are sound and valid from the given information, as well as assessing how reliable the given information is.
3. Application and Analysis
Students are expected to demonstrate an ability to apply the appropriate Economic concepts and principles in their analysis of real-world Economic issues and policy choices, as well as construct economic arguments that are coherent and logically sound to support their analysis.
4. Evaluation
Students are expected to demonstrate an ability to critically evaluate different explanations and perspectives. In addition, students should be able to acknowledge various unwritten assumptions and recognise their significance. Finally, students should be able to critically synthesise their arguments and craft arguments and decisions that are rational and logical.
More information can be found under the SEAB Syllabus (H1) and SEAB Syllabus (H2).
3. A Level Economics Exam Format
At H1 Economics level, students will sit for 1 paper (3 hours long) that consists of two Case Study Questions (CSQ). At the H2 level, students have 2 papers (both 2 hours 15 minutes long), the first consisting of CSQ and Paper 2 testing Essay questions.
3.1. H1 Economics
90 marks, 3 hours
The H1 Economics paper consists of two compulsory Case Study Questions, each question carrying a weightage of 45 marks. There are two main types of questions, Data Response questions which are typically short-answer questions, and Higher-order Questions which are similar to essay questions.
3.1.1 Challenges Faced in H1 Economics
In the A Level H1 Economics paper, H1 Economics students tend to struggle fulfilling the requirements of the questions, especially the short-answer questions. This is especially so if students are unable to distinguish the various command words being used in the question, which dictate how the question should be answered. For instance, the command word “discuss” implies that students should provide both sides of the argument, which is both their thesis and their anti-thesis. On the other hand, “explain” means that the question only requires students to mention one side of the argument, without a need to evaluate other perspectives. If students do not recognise the requirements of the different command words, they will end up not answering the question and will not earn marks regardless of how familiar they are with the content.
3.1.2. How To Score in H1 Economics
Thus, in order to score in H1 Economics, students should place due emphasis on their examination skills and learn the different question requirements, on top of achieving content mastery of the various economic concepts. For instance, students should recognise that when 2-mark data-response questions ask students to describe a change in an economic trend, they are expected to identify the general trend to attain the first mark, and provide a meaningful refinement to the trend to earn the second mark as an unspoken rule.
For more of such tips and tricks to score in the H1 Economics examination, we recommend that students seek additional help early, through enrolling in A Level Economics Tuition.
3.2. H2 Economics
Paper 1 (Case Study Questions)60 marks, 2 hours 15 minutes
Paper 2 (Essay Questions)75 marks, 2 hours 15 minutes
All H2 Economics students are required to sit for 2 papers, each paper being 2 hours 15 minutes in duration. In Paper 1, students are required to answer 2 Case Study Questions. Similar to the H1 Economics paper, there will be two main types of questions, Data Response questions and Higher-order Questions. In Paper 2, students are required to answer a total of three Essay Questions, one from Section A, one from Section B, and the third question can be from either Section A or B. Section A tests questions that focus mainly on Microeconomics, while Section B tests questions that focus mainly on Macroeconomics. Each essay question carries 25 marks each.
3.2.1 Challenges Faced in H2 Economics
H2 Economics students often face the same struggles that H1 Economics students face in Paper 1, as mentioned above. On top of that, Time Management is often a huge struggle for many H2 Economics students, especially for the Essay Questions in Paper 2. With the sheer amount of content and in-depth arguments that they are expected to churn out in just 2 hours 15 minutes, many H2 Economics students tend to struggle with time management, and may have no choice but to submit incomplete or poor-quality essays at the end of the examination.
Another struggle that H2 Economics students may have is that even though they are well-versed in the content, they may not know what content to write about in the essay. As a result, these students are not able to tailor their existing content knowledge to fit the scope of the question, resulting in poor results for Paper 2. This is a result of revision that is not exam-focused and targeted, as well as a lack of exposure to the different types of essay questions.
3.2.2. How To Score in H2 Economics
Here at MindFlex, we recommend that students get sufficient timed practices in order to hone their time management skills. Once they are comfortable completing the paper under the stipulated time constraints, they should then practise drawing up essay outlines in order to have a strong grasp on the questions that commonly appear in examinations, as well as get a sense of what question types they are most comfortable answering.
That being said, we do understand that it may be difficult to obtain the necessary resources for repeated practice and exposure. Why not try seeking additional help from a Home Tutor? Here at MindFlex, we have an extensive database of over 6,000 experienced and qualified A Level Economics Tutors who have their own set of Economics resources ranging from H2 Economics summary notes, Economics model essays and H2 Economics past exam papers.
4. A Level Economics Tips and Resources
The amount of Economic concepts, theories and principles that A Level Economics students are required to know in order to do well in A Level Economics is overwhelming. Moreover, students also have to juggle their other subjects, which are equally demanding and content-heavy, as well as their Co-Curricular Activities (CCA).
As such, MindFlex has compiled a list of key study tips and free A Level Economics resources that are perfect to give you that extra boost to ace the A Level Economics examination.
4.1. A Level Economics Tips
4.1.1. Read Model Essays
Oftentimes, A Level Economics struggle in identifying the areas for improvement in the essays that they write. School teachers may also give feedback that is vague, since they have so many essays to mark and critique. As a result, students end up having to guess what is wrong with their essays or misinterpreting the feedback, which results in them continuing to commit the same mistakes in future essays.
As such, we feel that students will benefit from reading model essays as it can help them to spot gaps in their own essays. By comparing their essays with the model answers, this can help students to recognise what exactly is wrong with their answers, and make changes to their writing in future essays.
Moreover, model essays also tend to contain relevant real-world examples, as well as the much-coveted evaluation points that are often worth up to 5 marks in each essay. As such, these model essays can help students to gain new perspectives and arguments to use in their future essays, thus boosting their Economics grades.
4.1.2. Clear Your Doubts Regularly
Oftentimes, many A Level Economics students will not clear their doubts until just before the Examination week. This means that they do not have enough time to unlearn their misconceptions and clear their doubts, and thus sit for their examinations with their doubts uncleared.
Here at MindFlex, we recommend that students clear all of their misconceptions as promptly as possible, because the sooner students’ doubts are cleared, the faster they can gain mastery in that topic and begin their timed practice revision.
4.1.3. Practice Makes Perfect!
A Level Economics involves a lot of Economic concepts that may take a while for students to fully digest and understand. As such, practice is needed in order for students to get a good grasp of each concept and theory. With a lack of practice, students will not only struggle to understand the content that they learn in lessons, but they will also lack time management skills. This translates into not being able to complete the A Level Economics examination paper on time.
Therefore, MindFlex recommends students to have adequate practice for every Economic concept that is taught. MindFlex recommends that students keep up with the school tutorials and lectures. This way, students will get sufficient practice by the time they sit for the A Level Economics examinations.
4.1.4. Remain On Top Of The A Level Economics Curriculum
In A Level Economics, whether it is at the H1 or H2 level, the amount of content that students are expected to learn is immense. Ranging from Elasticity Concepts, Market Failure and Macroeconomic concepts such as the Key Economic Indicators, it is easy for students to begin lagging behind in school if they do not put in the effort to keep up with the tutorials and lectures. As such, we recommend that students read their lecture notes in advance before every single lecture to ensure that they are able to keep up with the pace of teaching. Afterwards, students should reinforce their learning by completing their tutorials on time, and participate actively in class to clear their doubts and misconceptions.
4.1.5. Seek Additional Help Outside of School
If needed, students can also consider seeking additional guidance from an Economics Tutor. Trying to tackle A Level Economics alone may prove to be challenging for many students as their revision may not be as targeted or exam-focused, and may thus yield poor results. As such, seeking additional guidance early will allow sufficient time for the A Level Economics Tutor to spot the student’s weaknesses, which will allow the tutor to tailor their teaching to the individual needs of the student.
