A HOP, SKIP, AND A JUMP

Nghĩa đen:

Một loạt các bước nhảy ngắn và nhanh (a series of short, quick jumping movements). (a hop, skip and a jump).

Nghĩa rộng:

  • Khoảng cách ngắn (a short distance) – về mặt không gian
  • Gần đạt được cái gì hoặc rất giống cai gì (a situation that is very close to achieving something or very similar to something) – về mặt tính chất

Cả hai nghĩa trên thực chất giống với cách nói close to something/doing something. Trong hầu hết các ví dụ bên dưới, có thể thay thành ngữ này bằng close to mà nghĩa không thay đổi.

Tiếng Việt có cách nói tương tự:

  • Chỉ vài bước chân…
  • Chỉ trong gang tấc, y hệt…

Thành ngữ này bắt nguồn từ đầu thế kỷ 18, ban đầu dùng để mô tả trò chơi gồm các động tác như vậy. Tuy nhiên, tới giữa thế kỷ 19, thành ngữ này được dùng với các ý nghĩa như đã nêu.

Cách dùng:

  • Dùng như một cụm trạng ngữ chỉ địa điểm.
  • Sau skip có thể có dấu phảy hoặc không đều được
  • Có thể dùng với các giới từ: from, to, away, away from

Ví dụ:

Her house is just a hop, skip, and a jump from mine.

LUYỆN PHÁT ÂM:
