The Segmenter 101 Project

SEG101 is a group of Viki users with qualified segmenting experience.

History

SEG101 started as a channel when Viki.com was Viikii.com back then. The channel was founded by mint0017 on October 26 2009.  The training program was created to set a standard on segmenting that will produce the best quality of subtitling.

Due to the high demand of training from the users of the Viikii website, the Segmenter 101 project was divided into Traditional and Express programs.  Traditional program follows the complete set of levels that a newbie must finish while Express program is the shorter version of the Traditional that caters to those Viikii users with past segmenting experiences.

Since 2009, Viikii.com did a lot of changes from its website design, contents and the tools we use for segmenting. For 3 years, we used the classic segmenting tool. SEG101 created its own set of guidelines for using the tool that provides good quality of subtitling. For those years, the programs (traditional and express), were able to produce good segmenters and their skill in segmenting was well received.

The Viikii then which is the Viki now, expanded the website because of its increasing number of users and contributors. In 2013, They made another revision of the website and introduced the beta segment timer. The new tool is completely different from the classic segmenting tool. This change has become a huge challenge to the SEG101 program and all the users of Viki.

For the first few months after activating the beta segment timer, there was a lot of protest among users particularly the segmenters of the Viki website. While some segmenters were able to adapt with the change, other segmenters still prefers the classic segmenting tool better including some staff of SEG101. This change of tool has restrained SEG101 from continuing its operation.

Some of the staff in SEG101 did study and learned beta segment timer and incorporated some of the concepts from the classic segmenting tool. But they weren’t enough to cater the number of students so the traditional program was closed. Express did continue to operate which was headed by mihaelagh under mint0017’s tutelage.

Express then changed its training pattern and followed the Traditional’s complete set of levels with the beta segment timer at hand. This has prompted SEG101 to decide for a merge of Traditional and Express since the difference of the two no longer exist.

Philosophy

It is the quality and not the quantity of segments.

Mission

To provide the platform that enables volunteers in Viki to learn segmenting.

To guide the students to view segmenting from the viewer’s perspective with segments that has accurate timing, length, and cut.

To  help Viki users who want to contribute by learning segmenting

To provide the Viki community with qualified segmenters.

Graduates

Viki has provided a badge for graduates of Seg 101.  The badge is awarded to the student after successfully passing the graduation videos.
