Distillation of Calcium Salts to obtain AcetophenoneAcetophenone is an organic compound with the formula C6H5COCH3. It is a colorless liquid with a sweet smell and is used as a flavoring agent and in the production of various chemicals. Acetophenone can be obtained by the distillation of calcium salts.Distillation of Calcium Salts:Calcium salts of carboxylic acids can be used for the preparation of ketones by dry distillation. The calcium salts of carboxylic acids are thermally decomposed to give the corresponding ketones. The reaction takes place by the elimination of carbon dioxide. In the case of acetophenone, it can be obtained by the distillation of calcium salts of benzoic acid (C6H5COO)2Ca and calcium salts of acetic acid (CH3COO)2Ca. The reaction takes place as follows:(C6H5COO)2Ca + (CH3COO)2Ca → 2C6H5COCH3 + CaCO3The reaction mixture is heated gently and the distillate is collected. The distillate is then washed with water to remove any impurities and dried over anhydrous calcium chloride. Conclusion:Acetophenone can be obtained by the distillation of calcium salts of benzoic acid and calcium salts of acetic acid.
