This has popped up on my radar. I drive a 2011 Golf and love it – touch wood, to date in 136000 KMS, no probs but getting ready to bail.

Qashqai TIX-Trail ST-LMazda CX5 Maxx Sport or GT and nowGolf Alltrack Wagon

are all on my shortlist.

Does anyone here HAVE an Alltrack that they'd like to comment on?

Hi, tks for reply. I had read that already though, good article. But I was really after some real world user/s thoughts. Might not get them here though, apparently a fairly rare car still!

I have an Alltrack and love it. I don't have any of the problems with the DSG that were mentioned in the article above – mine behaves really well in all circumstances.

I am coming from a hot hatch and find the power fine. I love all of the convenience features – the screen and infotainment systems work really well and the radar cruise as part of the DAP option works incredibly well.

Test driving all is the way to go though because it is what is important to you that is important and each of the above will offer different advantages.

Question, and not a troll/joke. How are the air vents power wise in the rear? Friend is looking for a car like this but has a pet kelpie who sits in rear seats but needs GOOD cold aircon.

They are pretty week compared to the front. My two whippets stand in the rear but I have the sunroof option so it doesn't matter two much.

Somebody on watercooled thinks that the rear vent are fine for his dog so go figure.

Pity, cross that off his list then. His dog is getting old and he wants to buy a new car to help her stay cool.

Yes – that was answering my question on the suitability of the A/C for a dog in the cargo area. There's info in this thread http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/f197/golf-alltrack-99263-4.html

I've decided I wouldn't buy one for other reasons.

I have one, white with sports luxury pack.

Looks exactly like this: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ns5stekr7NU/VC3vhqIuOaI/AAAAAAARyX4/qJmnz6E1sJ4/s1600/VW-Golf-Alltrack-6.jpg

Main criteria for me was large boot space, AWD, sporty performance and large sunroof.

We compared it to the Mazda CX5 and Subaru Outback but in the end the Alltrack felt better in every way.

Standard leather interior is great, feels quite luxurious and there is plenty of room for seating 4 large adults, 5 is a little bit tighter in the back but definitely not uncomfortable. We were quite suprised with how much room there was in the back.

Boot space is excellent, beats nearly all SUV's. Stacks of room and becomes enormous when putting the seats down for one-off pickups for furniture, etc.

Performance is great. Beats nearly all SUV's or wagons in its class. Quite zippy around town and never feels like it is struggling. Quite a decent amount of low-mid range torque for hills, etc. Never really feels like you have to rev it too much.

Sunroof is awesome, full glass panaromic and makes the weekend day trips on windy roads feel more exciting.

Fuel economy is not as great as manufacturers claims, I think we are averaging around 8-9l/100kms compared to the claimed 6.7l/100kms although we never drive it in Eco mode. I'm sure it would come a lot closer otherwise.

Over all very happy with the purchase, no real negatives have popped up.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

That looks nice – did you get the optional wheels (or are are they part of the sunroof pack?)

Did you go for the extended warranty too?

The 18in wheels as pictured come with the sports luxury pack.

I have it on a 3 year novated lease through work so didn't opt for extended warranty.

Mazda all the way. Conventional auto will outlast any CVT and DSG found in VWs and Nissans if you plan on keeping it long term. Hence why most off load their VWs at end of warranty because any repairs from there on in is big bucks.

AnotherThe recall is DRW02 and the problem is a possibly cracked ring groove in the torque converter. The affected vehicles must be inspected by removing the engine and transmission and disassembling to the point where the technician can visually check the serial number of the torque converter. If the serial number falls into a certain range, the torque converter must be replaced. When my car was inspected the technician determined that it was not one of the affected parts, but the photo of the torque converter serial number he took for the report indicates that it is. So the service manager wants to pull it apart again to re-inspect and, if necessary, replace the torque converter.

We bought our first brand new car mid last year, a 2.5L Cx-5. We were left heartbroken when it broke down. Long story short, the car lost power while trying to accelerate from a stop on green light then four of the warning lights came on: check engine, AT, traction control and tyre pressure.I then pulled over on the side gave it good 10 minutes while I tried to work out what all the warning signs meant, checked tyres, checked if the engine was overheating..Then drove about 4k's from there to work and did not have any other issues. Later I had to get it towed to the dealership as they thought it would be unsafe to drive the car. Then the next day I was advised that transmission had failed and metal was found in the sump underneath the gearbox. So parts had to be shipped from Japan.

got a new 2015 cx5 maxx sport 2.5 AWD in june. transmission failed after 1300 km. brought to the mazda dealer. dealer said it will need to replace the whole transmission unit and aus don't have stock, need to wait for 2-3 weeks for ship from japan.

Thanks for this. Don't think the sports luxury pack will be part of my thoughts should I get this car. What is the small rectangular thing in the front lower bumper? Some sort of radar?

Went and found one in Perth yesterday at dealer to sit in. No time for drive unfortunately. VERY nice interior. Though I notice the upper door panels inside in the back are hard, versus the soft touch plastic that makes up my back doors in my 2011 Golf. That's a backward step in quality. But, I DO drive from the front seat!

It's not a vehicle I wanted to own outside of the warranty period- have a look on the Watercooled forums in the GolfVII section and make up your own mind. There are still some DSG issues (very expensive to fix) and electronic gremlins. The servicing costs are also comparatively expensive.

Don't get me wrong, VW make some very nice vehicles, but I think they're really pumping out the new models trying to get to number 1 in vehicle sales and perhaps letting quality lapse (like Toyota finally admitted to doing a couple of years back.)

It seems you have had some bad luck or your post is BS. There are two CX5s in my family and they have not skipped a beat since ownership. Both were series 1, the very first to be released in Australia. My place of employment currently have four on the road, racking up kilometres everyday- again no major dramas, I've had numerous Mazdas since late 90s and honestly they have been solid as a rock.

Mazda have issues with their diesels and those I do not recommend. The articles you posted above claim the owners had top of the line 2012 CX5 which are the first generation Diesel Akeris. It has been well documented the first generation CX5 diesels had issues.

yes, looking to get the Alltrack. want the bigger boot space of the wagon without going too big on the exterior. the mobile app connections is a draw. I nearly bought the Passat Alltrack in run-out last year, just couldn't get organised.might get Mum a Polo while I'm there.currently have a 2006 GTI DSG since new, done 114k km and love it, might keep it too. I get a bus to work so they're weekend kms.

also like the Mazda 6 wagon Touring for similar money, but bigger. CX-3 too small, CX-5 is uninspiring, getting old, fewer toys The XV and Forester boot isn't really any bigger than the Golf hatch, maybe even smaller. The HRV is too compromised by the 1.8L and the CRV is too big.The Nissans are uninspiring.Toyotas, I want a car, not an appliance.

Yeah, this does indeed look great. Went on carsales.com.au on the weekend and there was a std white MY16 Alltrack (no options) in Perth driveaway at the price of $37790. Gone now. Bugga!

Looking at a Hyundai Tucson too – they look pretty damn nice as well. But, it'll be in the driving I think! And finish. And THAT'S probably where the VW will win again. They are just so nice and solid to drive.

Most likely a blocked drain hose or a problem with the drain hose connection. Dealership should be able to fix it easily.

Update on the leaky Golf Alltrack, apparently blocked drain....told the dealer to sort out the interior mess as well.....hopefully get it back in a day or two as good as new!In terms of my brief time with the car, must admit I was pretty stoked with whole experience. Picked it up from the dealer and then headed straight down to Batemans Bay for the weekend. The 1.8tsi is a gutsy little engine and the car itself is packed with lots of little goodies such as stop/start, android auto, paddle shifters etc, so plenty to keep me amused on the trip. The Golf Alltrack certainly has a Premium feel, terrific cabin layout and extremely comfortable seats.

I even managed a little off-road which was fun.

Overall very pleased, let's hope the leaky sunroof is the first and last hiccup for a while.

It's a concern as bits like that should be checked at the factory.

I've got a factory sunroof on a 12yo vehicle and it has never flooded from the roof drains blocking. It's always parked outside and often on a steep slope (which I'd imagine could exacerbate such issues.)

If they brought them out in manuals I'd be more interested in buying one (that would remove my biggest fear – the long term DSG maintenance/ repairs).

Update on my Alltrack, got it back from the garage last Saturday, assured me all fixed, both drain tubes kinked apparently. Bit surprised both were faulty but fair enough. Inside looked reasonable, if I was being really picky then I could probably see a little mark here and there but glad to have the car back. Cleaned and polished the outside on Saturday. Used minimal water on the wash...all seemed ok. Car parked under cover, no rain and yet use the car again tonight Wednesday and guess what? Water mark on the passenger side pillar....pretty pissed off now so back to VW tomorrow again.....

Its clearly profitable to add 35mm to the suspension, stick some cladding over the wheel arches then create a new model name.(saying this as a fan of somewhat raised wagons .. Australian roads are not getting any flatter).

I have a White Alltrack with Driver Assist and Sport packs. Picked it up just prior to Christmas.

I love it but has a few issues:1. rattle in the dash (requires a full week at the dealer to remove the dash to fix) but they are giving me a replacement vehicle2. Sunroof does not sit flush it is slightly elevated on one side – they say it can't be fixed3. Tow bar option of nearly $2000 is ridiculous

The family really love the pano roof and I love the adaptive cruise, the engine is very responsive and Apple car play is a true joy.

The biggest love is for the boot space – family of 4 plus labrador pile in most weekends. It is cavernous.

It is just such a nice size size for the family and driving around inner city.

Highly recommend the Alltrack

Seems to be a common problem. Apparently they need to be integrated with the rear parking sensors (ie disable them when trailer connected), you also seem to need special interface modules- no more simply piggy back the trailer wiring onto the factory loom. I've also heard of software changes in the ECU being part of the norm. Vehicles with the fancy foot wave motion to open the boot need that sensor moved (eg. some Fords.)

Everything is so complex these days!
