Durry D Hi, im troubleshooting mycar battery and alternator. My car is having trouble starting, i already charged the battery and it did nothing. How much voltage is the alternator supposed to give at idle?? My current voltage output at idle with no ac was @ 13.20vdc the it dipped into 12.9x vdc, then back to 13.20vdc Is this acceptable in this alternators?? Im 90% sure my battery is dead My car: volvo s40 t5 2005 mt, 80,000 miles. Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2 #1 · Oct 7, 2013 Hi, im troubleshooting mycar battery and alternator. My voltage doesn't drop below 14 ever, even when slamming idling! My batts 2 years old and that's with ~600 watts for the sound system #3 · Oct 8, 2013 When running you should get slightly over 14 volts, even at idle. It should be steady. #4 · Oct 8, 2013 To my understanding the alternator works...but its not 100% optimal. Right? Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2 0 Reply #5 · Oct 8, 2013 It sounds that way. What I don't understand is why you are not getting power system warning. That light is pretty sensitive & would usually trip in the situation you are describing. What is your battery voltage with car off? Should be about 12.6V. You charged battery but car still cranks poorly? Alternator wouldn't affect that. Maybe you some internal battery failure. Bad cell? Have you done the usual clean & tighten connections? #6 · Oct 8, 2013 I gave the battery a slow charge and then took it out of the charger and let thw battery rest for like and hour, the battery lost all it charge ...so obviously the battery needs replacement. And yeah i got all weird messages when trying to start the car with low battery. But the alternator output worries me. Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2 0 Reply #7 · Oct 8, 2013 So yes, the battery is junk. Don't worry about the alternator until you get a fresh battery in there. Volvo has an "interesting" system for regulating alternator output. Your battery could easily be the cause. #8 · Oct 8, 2013 Will do that, getting a die hard battery from sears ...our battery size is 94R? Right? Note! For vehicles manufactured from week 05 2006, the battery temperature sensor has been replaced by a new function in the central electronic module (CEM). The central electronic module (CEM) calcualtes battery temperature based on outside temperature, which is obtained from the outside temperature sensor. Click to expand...
How does that get even remotely close to figuring out the actual temperature of the battery? #14 · Oct 9, 2013 (Edited) Lol, I was thinking the same thing. Yeah, this is hilarious for us with limited knowledge... But knowing just a hair I'm guessing it is done by courant strength or else comparative measurement as the current from the external temp sensor will be affected according to temperature. Than again electronic engineering works in mysterious ways so I could be completely off... :D You know, measuring temperature is how most rechargeable battery fill rate status is measured from. #15 · Oct 9, 2013 Come on, the CEM knows all. :) The CEM already knows your cars current charge rate, running time, RPM & road speed. It's not much of a stretch to add the exterior temp & make a calculation. #16 · Oct 9, 2013 (Edited) My battery temperature sensor is disconnected. I made a thread about this recently. I didn't know that is what the sensor under the battery.....incredible. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk now Free 0 Reply #17 · Oct 9, 2013 That's what that little guy is about??? It doesn't sound like it would be very effective from where it's located but what do I know. I feel disappointed, I thought it could have been a Volvo Safety Item by sensing aging battery spill :p #18 · Oct 24, 2013 (Edited) It was my battery, went to sears and bought a gold advanced battery or something like that. Now even my long cranking issue is fixed. I have to connect that battery temperature monitor/sensor Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk #19 · Oct 24, 2013  I'm thinking thats the kind of battery I'm going to replace my old ones with in both vehicles when the time comes. They are AGM instead flooded cell batteries. Insert Quotes Post Reply
