A Note From Our New Hampshire Chapter Chair –
Diana Moore, December, 2025
December is upon us. And as we wrap up 2025, we can look forward to a new year, and what that brings in 2026. As the new Chapter Chair for the New Hampshire Chapter of the AMC, I would like to begin my term with open communication and fostering connection between chapter leadership and chapter members. I took on this role, which has a two-year commitment, to further serve an organization that has become an integral part of my life.
I’m originally from Philadelphia and always loved Nature. The first time I saw mountains was at my best friend’s sweet sixteen, when her parents invited a bunch of us to a cabin in the Poconos. I remember after driving an hour and nearing our cabin, I had asked, “Where are the mountains?” To which I received the answer, “We’re in the mountains.” I had had in my mind an image of mountains like the Rockies, and that was not the Poconos.
Being a lover of Nature, as a young adult I naturally joined the AMC, and Delaware Valley was my chapter, but I hadn’t understood the value of what that chapter could give my life. I moved to South Florida in my mid-thirties, and after three years, I couldn’t wait to move to New Hampshire. I had always wanted to live in New England, and I desperately missed the four seasons.
I began small-scale hiking almost every weekend, and I had heard about the NH48 and was interested in exploring them, but they seemed so far away from my house in Hooksett. I just didn’t know how to do it.
I had met someone on a dating site who was very interested in the fact I put that I was an avid hiker on my profile. Soon into our relationship, she invited me to hike Mt. Liberty, a 4000-footer, and I naturally said yes. She’d hiked all the 48 in winter as well as the all the rest in the Northeast, completing her NE111 in winter. She led me up Mt. Liberty in winter conditions in November, making it clear that this was not an actual winter hike — It was just winter conditions. I didn’t care. I was having fun. And when we made it to the top, I was in awe. She looked at me and said, “Welcome to my world.”
That relationship didn’t last more than two years, but my passion for the Whites and the natural resources of New Hampshire did. After hiking many of the 48 with her, I had felt alone and scared to go on my own. I discovered the Hiking Buddies group on Facebook and started going on hikes with them and leading ones with peaks I wanted to bag, but I felt like I needed training if I was going to safely lead groups or go out with friends. I also really wanted to have a sense of autonomy and self-reliance.
That’s when I discovered the Spring School at Cardigan Lodge. I thought, “what a great deal! Food, lodging, AND leadership training?” I signed up right away. That weekend changed my life. I finally felt like I had found my people — people like me who loved the outdoors and responsibly so. I came back the next year and did the Winter School leadership training, got my Wilderness First Aid (WFA) training, and did not just three, but six mentored hikes, starting with the three-season ones. I figured you couldn’t have too much mentoring.
Slowly I became increasingly involved in the chapter, making connections with amazing people I admire and sharing my love of the outdoors with others through leading hiking and paddling events and instructing at the Cardigan Schools. I love giving back, and I have gained so much from this chapter, I feel privileged to be able to give back as Chapter Chair for the next two years. – Diana Moore, New Hampshire Chapter Chair, December 2025

ALL OUT: AMC ACTION PLAN 2025-2030
Jan 7, 2025 | News
Since 1876, the Appalachian Mountain Club has been a leading voice for conservation while connecting people to the joy of the outdoors. We’ve led the charge on landmark legislation like the Weeks Act in 1911 and the Highland Conservation Act in 2004. We’ve served as hands-on stewards of nearly 2,000 miles of trails and protected more than 114,000 acres of the iconic 100-Mile Wilderness through our Maine Woods Initiative. Our community of 90,000 members from Maine to Virginia make use of our vast recreational network of outdoor program centers, lodges, huts, and camps—but our aspirations are even bigger.
